The lightweight division will usher in a new champion this weekend. Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler will battle it out for the 155-pound belt at UFC 262. The winner of the fight will most likely fight the winner of the main event at UFC 264 between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. However, there are several top lightweights that are patiently waiting in the ranks for their shot. Islam Makhachev is one of them.

Khabib Nurmagomedov has highly endorsed Makhachev as the name to take over the lightweight division. Unfortunately, despite being on a seven-fight win streak, he is nowhere close to fighting for a title. Makhachev will hope that changes in his next fight.

Islam Makhachev to get a title shot if he gets past Thiago Moises?

Makhachev put out a tweet a few hours back. He wrote, “TOP 10 of LW division is a bunch of old a** slick fighters. Not a single one accepted the fight they were offered.  NO MATTER WHAT, I’M GONNA KEEP MOVING AND GET THAT BELT SOON, with or without these clowns. See you July 17 @ufc @espnmma”

It was recently announced that Makhachev will make his return to the octagon against Moises. Makhachev sits at #10 in the division; Moises is not ranked. Despite that, the latter, who is on a three-fight win streak, has looked impressive in each of his wins.

Makhachev took to Twitter earlier this week to voice his frustration on not being able to secure a fight. He stated that both Rafael dos Anjos and Paul Felder turned down a fight against him.

If Makhachev secures a win, he will move to 8-0. On the back of his run, it will be difficult for the UFC to deny him a title shot anymore. On the flip side, If Makhachev loses to Moises, it will derail his aspirations of a title shot.

If Makhachev wins, there will be a lot of extremely interesting fights for him at lightweight.
