Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones’s feud started out pretty harmlessly. Izzy wanted to challenge the throne of Jones and tried to incite the former Light Heavyweight champion by calling him out. The pair have been responding to each other over a potential match up for a while now. However, a spanner was thrown in the works when Jones announced that he will be moving up to heavyweight.

Adesanya is reigning as UFC’s Middleweight Champion, so jumping to heavyweight for a fight against Jon Jones may not suit him due to the obvious size differences. But that hasn’t stopped both men as they continue to build this rivalry on twitter.

Jones attacked Izzy on Twitter by wondering out loud if Adesanya’s own father believes in his son beating Jones. Izzy clearly didn’t like that remark, as he responded by bringing up how Jones’s mother is probably ashamed of him.

Israel Adesanya vs Jon Jones to become a reality?
While the start of this rivalry felt a little artificial, it feels painfully real now. Fighters call out fighters in other divisions all the time, but those fights don’t get made. Many even thought Izzy and Jones wouldn’t fight due to the obvious size handicap Izzy would have against Jones. However, the MW champion has continued to fan the flames and come after Jon.
Jones has said that he is committed to his heavyweight move but wouldn’t mind coming back to 205, eventually. He has gotten himself engrossed in arguments about facing Jan Blachowicz as well. However, that is still more likely than the Izzy matchup right now.
Adesanya seems hellbent on cleaning out the Middleweight division. If Jones is taking the same time to make a play at heavyweight, this matchup should be available a few ways down the road.
Adesanya and Jones have both had their fair share of bitter rivalries in the sport. But now that they have targeted their poison towards each other, a lot of entertaining tweets have come out. Whether it all leads to a fight is something we will have to wait and see, as they focus on the immediate challenges ahead of them.
