In a recent interview, McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh stated that fighters such as “The Notorious” should be allowed to take part in catchweight fights with other UFC fighters.
To this, former UFC star and promoter Chael Sonnen strongly agreed and said that he liked Coach Kavanagh’s point.
Chael Sonnen (29-15-1) on his YouTube channel, also suggested a matchup between Conor McGregor and Max Holloway regardless of their weight class. He later mentions that these are some ideas that UFC President Dana White doesn’t relish.

Similarly, Sonnen also states that weight class doesn’t matter between two fighters in the lower weight divisions. Which he insists on time and time again.
“You can weigh 300, he can weigh 500. It’s you versus you. Got it-got it, shake hands and go. It’s my game versus your game.” he said.

Chael Sonnen supports Catchweight fights in the UFC
To support his cause, Chael Sonnen mentioned the BMF title and how it was the most fun night in the history of the sport.
“One of the most fun nights in the history of the sport was the BMF title. That’s just not my opinion, the stars came out; they sold out Madison Square Garden.”

He states that fighters apart from the Heavyweight division, where there’s actually a vast difference in size should be allowed in catchweight fights.
“I have no problem with a catchweight,” he said. “I don’t give a goddamn what they weigh, do you? What’s the difference? You’ve both been 45 pounders, you’ve both been 55 pounders, close enough.”
What did Conor McGregor’s coach actually say?
On the show with Kacper Rosolowski of Submission Radio, Kavanagh said “The funny thing is, I think for guys at Conor’s level and Max’s level and those guys, I don’t even really know why they bother cutting weight anymore, you know.”
In conclusion, he says that both the fighters are of equal caliber and should be allowed to fight each other irrespective of their weight class.
