Anderson Silva is a UFC legend, there is no doubt about it. ‘The Spider’ has long been a dominant force in the UFC, becoming the Middleweight champion in just his second fight in the promotion at UFC 64.

Silva made his debut in 2006 against Chris Leben, spectacularly winning via first-round KO. During his career in the UFC, Silva amassed a 16 fight win streak until ultimately losing to Chris Weidman at UFC 162.

Now at 45 years of age, Silva will look to close out his UFC career with a win over Uriah Hall. Most MMA fans have not witnessed Silva in his prime. Partially because of the exponential growth of the UFC and the sport within the last few years.

Silva’s rise to stardom was achieved the night he beat ‘The Bad Guy’ Chael Sonnen. At UFC 117, with Sonnen having dominated the Spider, Chael was moments away from victory. However, Silva would manage to trap Sonnen and submit him in the dying minutes of the very last round, showing his true grit.

Silva sat down with Ariel Helwani of ESPN to discuss his upcoming fight and his legendary career. During the interview, Helwani asked the Spider if he had foreseen himself fighting till the age of 45.

“My brother, let me tell you something,” Silva said. “When people ask me about how much I love my sport, I say one thing.

“This sport is my heart, it is my air you know, I fight for my entire life.”

“It’s not about fighting, it’s about martial arts. For me, I’m a good martial artist and when I go inside the cage, I don’t go for a fight, I go to prove and show something special to my fans.”

Martial arts saved Anderson Silva’s life

Ariel Helwani brought up Silva’s Instagram video where the Spider gave credit to the sport for saving his life. Silva responded, “It changed completely in my life and saved it too.”

Anderson went on to elaborate, “I believe martial arts has given me everything I have in my life you.” Silva continued, “I can provide a different life for my kids and my wife because martial arts gave me the opportunity.”
