Chael Sonnen is one of the best fighters to have ever step foot into the Octagon. Sonnen was one of the first people in the sport to use his gift of gab to get under his opponent’s skin and gain a psychological advantage. He backed up his words with his fighting pedigree and earned the MMA world’s respect. 

In 2016, Sonnen decided to take his experience as a fighter and set up a promotion called submission underground. The promotion puts up events where fighters both current and retired take on each other in grappling exhibition matches. Sonnen has been organizing these events almost every year, However, the card for the end of this year is an extremely stacked one with some incredible fights.

Submission Underground; Donald Cerrone, Felicia Spencer, and more to light up the event in December 2020

The promotion announced the Submission Underground card on Sunday. The main event features veteran submission grappler Satoshi Ishii as he takes on Jason Fowler who has been on Submission Underground a few times before. He faced Greg Jones and won controversially at SUG 17. 

However, in the rematch at SUG 18, he erased all doubts as he secured a dominant win over the same fighter. He now takes on another tough challenge in Satoshi Ishii for the SUG Absolute championship.

Amanda Loewen takes on UFC fighter Felicia Spencer for the SUG women’s championship. Loewen is a long time veteran at SUG events who will have her work cut out against a dangerous BJJ Black Belt in Spencer. 

This will be Spencer’s first time in the promotion. Her last professional fight was against Amanda Nunes for the belt. Loewen last fought on SUG 17 against Gillian Robertson. 

Other notable matches include Ryan Bader vs Derrick Lewis. ‘The Black Beast’ is the fourth-ranked heavyweight in the UFC. His last fight was a win over Aleksei Oleinik. Bader on the other hand is the former Bellator light heavyweight champion, having lost his belt to Nemkov three months ago.

Donald Cerrone will take on former rival Rafael dos Anjos who he fought for the lightweight belt. ‘Cowboy’ last fought at UFC Fight Night: Covington vs Woodley. Meanwhile, Rafael dos Anjos was set to fight this weekend; however, his fight seems to be in jeopardy as Islam Makhachev pulled out due to injury. 

Fabricio Werdum is a highly ranked BJJ Black Belt. He will take on Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, who has been away from the fight game for some time.
