Robert Whittaker is one of the best middleweights in the division. The former champion proved his mettle by bouncing back with two impressive wins following his fight against ‘Izzy’ where he lost his belt. ‘The Reaper’ has faced some of the very best fighters in the division and has almost always come out on top.

Most recently, he secured a win over a dangerous knockout artist in Jared Cannonier. After his title defense against Paulo Costa, Adesanya had made it very clear that he would like to fight Cannonier next if he was able to secure a win in dominant fashion. However, the champion also mentioned that he would take a rematch against ‘The Reaper’ if he wins.

Robert Whittaker speaks on the inevitability of a title fight

Robert Whittaker has always maintained that the belt does not mean the same to him as it does to other fighters. In a recent interview, Ariel Helwani asked ‘The Reaper’ if he never won the belt again or fought for it if it would bother him.

Whittaker replied, “No, but you see I will fight for the belt again. It’s inevitable. I just don’t worry about it because it’s inevitable. That’s been my whole mentality. My mentality on title fights or the title isn’t one of reluctance. It’s not one like ugh, I don’t want to fight for the belt. It’s more like I will fight for the belt, it’s natural.”

‘The Reaper continued, “I don’t have to worry about it. Because I’m just going to keep beating whoever they put in front of me and eventually, I’m going to be the only one standing at the top. And that’s as simple as it is.”

Following his loss against Israel Adesanya, ‘Bobby Knuckles’ took some time off before returning to the octagon. On his comeback, he faced Darren Till and Jared Cannonier and secured unanimous decision wins over both men. ‘The Reaper’ battled with health issues and only fought once in 2018 and 2019.

It looks as though the Australian fighter has been able to treat his injuries well and looks like a man reinvigorated. Still only 29, the Australian fighter has plenty of time on his hands to fight his way back to the title and hopefully win it. After his recent win UFC president, Dana White stated that a rematch against ‘Izzy’ makes sense. When do you think Whittaker will fight for the middleweight belt?
