Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed a desire to meet undisputed lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, post his spectacular win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. The Eagle announced his retirement from the sport soon after the match in the post-fight interview. The Russian President will personally congratulate the Dagestani, who became the first Russian fighter to top the UFC’s pound-for-pound list this past week.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet the undefeated #UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov to personally congratulate him on his historic record which amounts to 29 consecutive wins in the #octagon. On Saturday, Russian lightweight #champion Nurmagomedov defeated Justin Gaethje in the main event of #UFC254 in Abu Dhabi to retain his title for the third straight time and extend his stunning professional record to 29-0. Following his victory, Khabib announced his #retirement, delivering an emotional speech in the cage and stressing that he had promised his mother not to fight anymore after the tragic passing of his father and long-time coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Khbaib became the first Russian #fighter to achieve the first spot in the pound for pound ranking among UFC athletes. "Yes, the president said he will definitely meet Khabib when the fighter is ready and the pandemic situation won't be at the peak," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin will find time to meet Khabib Nurmagomedov once the pandemic settles down.

Moreover, Nurmagomedov’s impeccable record of 29-0 will remain unparalleled for years to come. Khabib’s achievements inside the Octagon have plummeted MMA’s growth globally. Additionally, it has put Russia on the world map for its increasing participation in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Needless to say, ever since Khabib’s entry inside the Octagon, there has been an upsurge of athletes making it to the UFC from regions of Russia, especially Dagestan and Chechnya.
