After almost two years out from the sport, Jorge Masvidal secured a brilliant knockout win over Darren Till in March 2019. His brilliant performance, however, was overshadowed by the backstage fight between him and Leon Edwards. While ‘Gamebred’ was giving an interview, ‘Rocky’ was seen yelling stuff at the American.

‘Gamebred’ then proceeded towards Edwards before punching him. This led to an all-out brawl between the two men and their camps. It also gave birth to one of Masvidal’s most iconic statements, ‘The three-piece and a soda’, which is what he claims to have given Edwards.

In a recent interview, Masvidal was critical of Edwards’ performance against Diaz, stating he does not have ‘meanness’ and ‘grit’ in him. This was obviously not received well by the Englishman. He responded, “That boy awake, the last time he said that he got put to sleep.”

‘Gamebred’ hit back on Twitter, stating, “Say it to my face #3pcanda”

Leon Edwards vs Jorge Masvidal is the fight to make in the welterweight division

Leon Edwards extended his win streak to 9-0 in the UFC’s welterweight division with a win over Nate Diaz. In most cases that would warrant a title shot. However, Dana White has stated multiple times that Colby Covington is next in line for a title shot. Therefore, Edwards will have to wait for his chance.

‘Rocky’ has fought just twice in the last two years. Injuries to both him and his opponents, along with the pandemic looming large, meant that he was not active. Edwards has fought twice in the six months of 2021 and will aim to keep active to make up for time lost.

‘Gamebred’ came up short against Kamaru Usman in his last outing as he was stopped violently. Masvidal has stated that he intends to return to action towards the tail-end of this year. Hence, Edwards would be the ideal candidate for him. This is both because of the rankings, and the genuine animosity between both men.
