The raging pandemic has derailed a lot of fights this year. Multiple fighters have tested positive due to which fights have had to be canceled last minute. While that has come as a boon to some, it has been a bane to others. Recent reports suggest that the fight between Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev has been canceled once again.

The fight between the up-and-coming Chimaev and ‘Rocky’ was set to headline the fight card on March 13th. The UFC will now start its hunt for a potential replacement for ‘Borz’ in the welterweight division.
This is the third time that the fight has been canceled. Edwards and Chimaev were initially set to face each other towards the tail end of 2020. However, a positive test ruled Edwards out of the fight due to which the fight was rescheduled for January 2021 on Fight Island.

Unfortunately, this time around it was ‘Borz’ who had to withdraw due to lingering effects of COVID-19. Due to which the fight was rescheduled for March 13th and has once again been canceled.

Will Leon Edwards take on Stephen Thompson as a replacement?
The fight between Edwards and Chimaev was an extremely hyped fight and one that fans wanted to see. It was set to be a litmus test for ‘Borz’ to see how he would fare against a top welterweight in Edwards.

Now that ‘Borz’ is no longer able to fight on March 13th, there are a host of options as to how can fight Edwards next month. ‘Wonderboy’ threw his name in the mix by tweeting, “Hoping for a full recovery for @KChimaev !! @Leon_edwardsmma let’s give the fans what they want to see! #3 vs #5! #makessense #Respectfully”

Thompson is ranked number 5 in the UFC’s welterweight division. He is on an impressive two-fight win streak over the likes of Geoff Neal and Vicente Luque. A fight against Leon Edwards would be a perfect opportunity to decide who gets to challenge for the title next.

‘Rocky’ is on an eight-fight win streak at the moment and a win in his next fight all but guarantees that he will fight for the title next. A win over ‘Wonderboy’ would be huge for Edwards.
