At UFC 265, the UFC crowned a new interim heavyweight champion in Ciryl Gane. ‘Bon Gamin’ stopped Derrick Lewis in round three to secure UFC gold for the first time in his career. This set him up for a fight against former teammate and training partner Francis Ngannou, who is currently the world champion at heavyweight. One fighter, in particular, had a close eye on the main event.

Jon Jones will most likely fight the winner of Gane vs Ngannou. Therefore, he had good reason to keep a close eye on Gane’s performance.

In the most recent episode of the Chael Sonnen show, Sonnen shared his thoughts on a potential fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. He said, “If you’re in Jon’s shoes, you have the right to fight for the championship because Dana said that you did. Do you want to go risk it against the most successful heavyweight of all time that’s what the question becomes. Now I am a competitor, the answer would be absolutely yes. Not to mention that is what Jon does for a living…..”

Sonnen continued, “I throw one more thing on there, which is Jon is going into a new weight class. He has been very reserved openly about stepping up with all of that size…..Stipe is one of those guys right in between. Right in that 240 range. I only submit for you that it could be a very good feeling out process… for Jon to get in there with a guy who is not the biggest heavyweight. But is bigger than anyone you have competed with before.”

Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic is the fight to make

Ngannou and Gane will fight it out for the undisputed title at some point in the near future. Miocic, who has been disgruntled about the fact that he did not get an immediate rematch against Ngannou, has been sitting on the sidelines ever since.

A fight with Jones would not only offer a very tough test for Miocic, but it would also guarantee a massive payday for both men involved. In the past, ‘Bones’ has taken tune-up fights after a long time away from the sport. Hence, he might be open do the same this time around as he moves to a new weight class.

Testing himself against the consensus GOAT at heavyweight in the UFC is not a bad way to get used to a new weight class.
