Derrick Lewis will aim to establish himself as a bonafide contender in the heavyweight division this weekend when he takes on Curtis Blaydes. ‘The Black Beast’ has previously fought for the UFC’s heavyweight title at UFC 230 against Daniel Cormier. However, on the night, Lewis came up short against ‘DC’.

After succumbing to another loss against Junior dos Santos following his loss to Daniel Cormier, Lewis built himself back up brilliantly. He is now on a three-fight win streak with wins over the likes of Blagoy Ivanov, Ilir Latifi, and Aleksei Oleynik.

If ‘The Black Beast’ is able to secure a win this weekend, he will most definitely put himself back in title contention against the winner of the title fight at UFC 260. But, even ahead of a bout of this magnitude, Lewis had time to focus on world hunger when asked an off-beat question.

Derrick Lewis shares his thoughts about space exploration

In the pre-fight press conference, a reporter asked Derrick Lewis about his thoughts on NASA’s Perseverance rover landing on Mars.
He said, “I’m going into one of the biggest fights in my career…. And you going to spend and waste my time, the last few minutes that we have together for a rover?”

“How much it cost? It’s like they should spend money on something like that, all I can think about is they can open like thousands of Popeye’s all over the world, and they waste it on the rover. You know people are hungry, man.”

After sailing through space for nearly seven months covering 293 Million Miles, the Perseverance rover finally touched down on Mars earlier today in what was a huge leap forward for space exploration and NASA. The rover will aim to study the planet for extraterrestrial life, among other things.

Closer to home though, Lewis will go into the fight with a height and reach disadvantage of about one-inch. His best bet to win the fight will be to keep the proceedings on a vertical base. The relentless Blaydes who has a takedown accuracy of 55% will test Lewis’ takedown defense of 53%.
