UFC 253 will see undefeated Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya (19-0) defend his title against undefeated Middleweight contender, Paulo Costa (13-0). The matchup between ‘Stylebender’ and ‘Borrachinha’ was a long-time coming, but now is just a few days away.

Former Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker has chimed in with whom he thinks will win the fight.

“I think Adesanya has the skill-set to beat Costa. I think he has the experience and the skills to edge away and pick him apart. The thing is, Costa is an X-Factor. His physique, his strength, his power, his cardio, his chin, all of that is abnormal. If you put that in an octagon with anybody, it’s hard. If I was a betting man, I’d lean towards Adesanya, but not by much.”

However, this is the second go in predicting this fight for Whittaker. When he was asked about this matchup last October after losing his belt to Izzy, he had this to say.

“Israel is very good. He is very good at picking people apart, especially because he has the advantages in reach. The thing is, Costa is huge. He is a big guy, he has got a chin, and he is very strong and powerful. But he does fade off. It’s hard to say, but I can see both fighters winning at different points.”

Which man will walk out as an undefeated champion in UFC 253?

Adesanya and Costa have made this a personal rivalry. From steroid jokes to funny sparring skits, this feud has really taken a pro-wrestling turn. However, it will all become real on Saturday when the pair finally lock horns in the Octagon.

Adesanya’s strategy should be simple. Tire out Costa with his fluid striking, and ensure he gets him to expend stamina while attacking him. Izzy cannot win this on power, so he has to rely on a smart game-plan to outsmart Costa. However, Costa isn’t a one-dimensional fighter. He has a decent BJJ game and could easily impose his will upon Adesanya if he can get him into a vulnerable position.

Both men bring unique skill-sets to the table. But what they share is a unique hatred for each other. While Robbo may have Izzy to come out on top, Costa will be lurking to ensure he gets one over on his rival.
