Tony Ferguson has always been in and around the title picture at lightweight. However, ‘El Cucuy’ could never realize his ultimate dream of becoming a champion in the UFC. The closest the Mexican-American fighter came to it was when he beat Kevin Lee for the interim title. During his unbeaten 12-fight win streak, Ferguson terrorized the lightweight division. He left his opponents in a bloody mess when by the time he was done with them.

During this run, he was scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov five times, but they fell through for a variety of reasons. The fight between the two men is perhaps one of the most anticipated fights in not only in the division but in the company’s history. There is perhaps no other fight that the UFC tried to put together and failed at so many times.

Fans always hoped that it would materialize at some point. However, after Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement at UFC 254, the dream of seeing the duo in the octagon blew up in smoke.

The show watch party on UFC Fight Pass captures a UFC fighter’s emotions while watching a UFC card. For the UFC 254 watch party, Nurmagomedov’s long-time rival Tony Ferguson was one of the many fighters who took part.

The video shows Tony Ferguson despondent as he walks away blurting expletives when ‘The Eagle’ says it would be his last fight in the promotion.

For a long time, both ‘El Cucuy’ and ‘The Eagle’ were considered the best in the division. They both dominated opponents put in front of them, and it was inevitable that they would fight each other at some point. 

Both fighters have immense respect for the other and have repeatedly stated that they would like to fight each other. Therefore, Tony’s reaction to Khabib announcing his retirement is understandable given that this fight will never happen.
