Weili Zhang’s Next Match Will Not Be Against Joanna Jedrzejczyk-Dana White Provides an Update

Weili Zhang has established herself as the undisputed champion in the UFC’s strawweight division after winning her belt against Jessica Andrade. In her first title defense ‘Magnum’ put on a fight of the year contender against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

The Chinese champion now aims to defend her belt for the second time. However, the identity of the opponent is yet to be revealed. Rose Namajunas who avenged her defeat at the hand of Jessica Andrade is the front runner for a title shot. But contradicting reports from Dana White and Rose’s camp have caused a lot of confusion over ‘Magnum’s’ next opponent.

Weili Zhang set to make her second title defense in 2021

In an interview, The Schmo asked Dana White for an update on the strawweight division and who would be fighting next for a title. White said, “Obviously the fight to make is Rose, so hopefully we can get that fight done. If not, the next in line would probably be Carla Esparza.”

White recently stated that Rose Namajunas is not interested in fighting for the title, as she did not like the baggage that came with being a champion. ‘Thug Rose’ has since refuted the claims and insists that she wants to fight for the title. 

Thug’ looked incredible in her split decision win against Andrade at UFC 251 and is a front runner for the next crack at the belt.

Magnum’ has looked better every time she has stepped into the octagon. The Chinese superstar is currency unbeaten in the UFC. Zhang has not fought since March due to the pandemic and will be itching to get back in the octagon to defend her title as soon as possible. 

Carla Esparza who is currently on a four-fight win streak will be next in line if the UFC and Rose cannot agree to a fight.
