Dustin Poirier snubbed the chance to fight for the vacant lightweight belt, opting to finish a trilogy with Conor McGregor instead. This paved way for a title fight between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira. After overcoming adversity in round one, Oliveria secured a knockout win in round two to win the belt.

Following his win over Conor McGregor at UFC 264, it was all but certain that Poirier vs Oliveira for the lightweight belt is the fight to make. However, Poirier started going back and forth with Nate Diaz on Twitter and stated that he would like to face Diaz in multiple interviews.
