Former champion Max Holloway makes a return to the octagon on January 17th as he takes on rising featherweight in Calvin Kattar. The former champion is ranked #1 in the UFC’s featherweight rankings, whereas Kattar is ranked #6.

The fight will be an excellent opportunity for both men to gain a few ranks and position themselves for a title shot in the near future.

Holloway is coming off 2 back-to-back losses for the first time since 2013. He lost his belt to Alexander Volkanovski in December 2019 via a unanimous decision. He then lost the rematch in an extremely controversial split decision loss earlier this year in July.

Max Holloway on his controversial loss to Alexander Volkanovski

In a recent interview with Brett Okamoto of ESPN, Okamoto asked ‘Blessed’ how he felt about the two losses to Volkanovski and if he would like a rematch at some point.

The former champion replied, “My mentality is just different, you know. It’s like if it was Kobe and Michael, they would play 10 times just to let the people know who the best is.

“They would play each other 10 times and be like look, this is why. And that is the mentality I strive for.”

‘Blessed’ continued, “Bro if you want to run it back 100 times we can do it…. Imma show you that I’m the better guy. But that’s just the mentality you know that’s just the mentality I have.

“I don’t know what kind of mentality they have and what they seek and whatever, but that is something they gotta figure out and they gotta do.

“I know what I wanna do and I know what kinda legacy I wanna leave when I’m all said and done. And I know what I want…. I wanna be like damn this guy was something else. He’s a competitor.”

Following the rematch, most fans and pundits alike felt that Max had done enough to win his belt back. However, the judges did not see it that way.

UFC President Dana White also felt that the fight was not judged properly and wanted to schedule the fight for a 3rd time immediately. The champion, however, was not interested in the same.
