Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric insists that his Madrid team-mate Sergio Ramos is happy and does not want to leave the club.

All reports in Spain and England claimed that Ramos had fallen out with the club President Florentino Perez over a new contract. Manchester United have been looking to take advantage of the centre-half’s situation at the club, as they want to strengthen their shaky defence.

But Modric is confident that Ramos, who is considered as one of the best centre-backs in the modern game, will not leave for United. The 29-year-old centre-back has been given the Captain’s armband, after the departure of Iker Casillas to Porto, and Modric believes that Ramos will be the man to lead Real Madrid in the 2015-16 season.

“I hope that Sergio stays as he’s so important for us,” Modric was quoted as saying by SPORT.

“Ramos is our captain and our leader, on and off the pitch. He seems happy and I feel that he will stay. I’m sure he wants to stay, too.”

Modric also stated that he wants to contribute to the team’s success and hopes to have an injury-free campaign, having been sidelined by two major injuries last term.

“Last season was difficult,” the Croatia international added.

“I suffered two serious injuries and it’s best forgotten. But I’m working well now and pain-free. I want to be able to help the coach and team as much as I can.”

Modric has been a key player in Madrid’s line-up since his arrival from Tottenham Hotspurs in 2012, and was instrumental in Blancos’ La Decima triumph in the 2013-14 season.

The 29-year-old Croatian international importance to the team was quite evident last term, as Madrid struggled to find form when Modric was injured, and surrendered a four-point lead in La Liga which they had maintained till March 2015.
