Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila Ali was a pioneer in women’s boxing paving the way for future generations of female boxers. However, it wasn’t an easy path for her as her father wasn’t always approving of her picking up the sport. Instead, she turned to an unexpected mentor in legendary coach Roger Mayweather.

In a recent Instagram post, the former champion detailed her rise as a boxer. She stated that many people weren’t familiar with her boxing career. She then revealed that the late Mayweather recognized her talents before she would go on to conquer the boxing world.”. I was born with it. Roger Mayweather used to say “you got a little thug in you don’t you!” I was flattered that he recognized it.” She wrote in the caption:

Mayweather had a close relationship with Ali, performing the role of a trainer and mentor, guiding her storied career. Ali even praised the legend during her induction into the boxing hall of fame and in a bunch of posts on social media. In a social media post back in 2015, Ali revisited her memories and title win with Mayweather, stating that he was like a father looking after her. “I have so many great memories with Rodger Mayweather winning multiple world titles together. Always had dad with me on my mirror. Looking into his eyes was like looking into my own. Cut from the same cloth.” She wrote.

However, her journey with Mayweather would end following his tragic death back in 2020. Ali paid tribute to her mentor in an Instagram post.

In the post, Ali stated that she was saddened after hearing the news. However, she claimed that he was now in a better place. Moreover, she even acknowledged the mentorship he provided her through the years and thanked him for always supporting her.

Sending love and light to his family and friend.” she wrote. Ali accomplished feats that no other woman before her was able to. However, a major part of her success can be attributed to Mayweather, who helped her become the success she did.
