Andy Murray finally got the better of Novak Djokovic and ended his eight match losing streak against the Serb in fine style, with a 6-4 4-6 6-3 win in the final of Rogers Cup.

Murray dedicated his triumph to his coach Mauresmo, who gave birth to a baby boy earlier in the morning.

“This win gives me a lot of satisfaction.

“This time last year I dropped out of the top 10. A lot of people asked questions of me and lost faith but I came back and got back to my best.

“I need to thank my team for that and especially Amelie.” said the Scot.

Murray took a defining lead in the first set, but was broken back to see the set being leveled at 4-4. The Scot broke again in the final game to take the advantage. Djokovic broke back early in the second set and despite slipping down the lead, came back strongly to level the match.

It was a tremendous strength of mental character shown by Murray, as he held on to his nerves to finally register a solid win over his arch rival, first since Wimbledon 2013. It also ended Novak’s Masters’ streak of 2015.

“I lost to a better player today. I lost to Andy, who I know very well. I did fight till the last point and did try my best. That’s something that I take as a positive from this week,” said the Serb.

“Andy deserved the win. He stepped in, played some great shots. Most of all the moments when he needed to, he served very, very well. He just came up always with big serves, so I couldn’t do much.”

Murray will now replace Federer as the world number two in the ATP Rankings, and will hope to give new push to his US Open quest by doing well at Cincinnati.
