The organizers of the Mutua Madrid Open have announced big news today. The ATP Masters 1000 tournament will now be played across two weeks from 2021.
This is a huge step up for the tournament in Madrid. With not a lot of tournaments exceeding the one week range, the tournament has successfully expanded. The main reason for expansion can be cited to the fact that it is one of the few tournaments to be a combined ATP Masters 1000 tournament and WTA Premier Mandatory tournament.
The director of Madrid Open, Feliciano López, expressed great joy in a recently released statement. “We’re happy to have achieved the goal of becoming a two-week tournament,” said Feliciano López.

The Madrid Open couldn’t take place this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was slated to begin a week before the French Open 2020, but the rise in coronavirus cases in Madrid forced the organizers to cancel the event.
But looking at its previous event, which happened in 2019, the Madrid Open is more of a one and a half week tournament with qualifiers. But as the tournament had both the ATP and WTA players, it needed an expansion.

Next year’s edition will begin on April 27. The WTA main draw begins on the 30th, whereas the ATP main draw is scheduled to begin on May 2. The expanded schedule will be helpful in the smooth conducting of the tournament since the previous editions would have caused the WTA and ATP fixtures to be cramped up.
