World No.11 Fabio Fognini has never reached a Grand Slam final in his 16-year career. He certainly ‘dreams’ of playing a major final. However, the Italian star chooses a tough opponent to play a Grand Slam finals with.

Fognini’s best result in a Grand Slam came at the 2011 French Open when be reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. He will certainly hope to better his results in the second part of his career.

“Arriving in a Slam final would be fantastic”: Fognini

The 32-year-old revealed that he has always admired the 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer. He would also like to play a Grand Slam final with the Swiss maestro, preferably at the Roland Garros.

Already arriving in a Slam final would be fantastic” said Fognini in an interview with Sky Sports, talking about his dreams to be realized in the rest of his career on the Tour.

“My idol is always Federer. So I would like to play with him. Better not to face the Swiss on the fast. I would rather challenge him to Roland Garros, even if in the last few years he has missed it in a couple of circumstances,” Fognini added.

Roger Federer vs Fabio Fognini head-to-head

Fognini’s wife Flavia Pennetta advised him to choose Rafael Nadal as Fognini defeated him in a historic match at the 2015 US Open. However, as Fognini has beaten the Spaniard before and hence he wants to defeat his idol once at the bigger stages.

Fognini and Federer have met each other four times in their career with the Swiss maestro prevailing in all of their encounters. Their only match at the Grand Slams came at the Wimbledon Championships 2012 when Federer triumphed in straight sets. Furthermore, Fognini has never won a set against Federer. Hence, it will certainly be difficult for the Italian to defeat Federer at a major final.
