When it comes to entertainment, most people tend to gravitate toward sports and Hollywood. It’s natural for fans to get enticed when the two come together. Something similar was witnessed a few years ago after Hendrick Motorsports‘ Kyle Larson got into an accident in New Zealand. This happened at the Western Springs Speedway, where Larson was competing in the United Truck Parts International Midget Series.

During a podcast interview, Larson talked about the time when he imitated the legendary actor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s appearance from the Terminator movie franchise. He did so to help himself get through a presumed six-month-long retirement after his accident.

Kyle Larson imitated The Terminator, but not for fun

The accident was horrific. The midget car barrel-rolled several times and Larson got seriously injured. He had to spend the night at the hospital where he got worried about having to put his career on hold. He believed he would be advised to rest and the hospital would inform NASCAR about his injury. Talking with Corey LaJoie in the Stacking Pennies podcast, Larson revealed, “I think I looked like a guy that got beat up.”

That’s when Larson decided to imitate Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s character from Terminator, and revealed that he wore sunglasses the entire day to partially hide his injuries. He said, “I didn’t want people knowing. […] I wore sunglasses all night. Like it’s nighttime and I’m watching races with my sunglasses on.”

Larson not wanting people back home to know about the injury became all the more tricky as famous motorsports reporter Lee Spencer was also present there.

Copying the Arnold Schwarzenegger look helped Larson maneuver through the time period when he was recuperating. However, it did not take as long as he had anticipated, and he was back on the tracks within a week—winning his first race upon his comeback.

How well did NASCAR drivers imitate the Terminator?

Arnold drove the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai pace car at Sonoma Raceway in 2015 to spread awareness about green energy. As the then Governor of California, he had initiated the path to build hydrogen fuel stations in the state, making California the first state in the country to do so.

However, NASCAR drivers up up hilarious display when they started impersonating the legendary actor. Brad Keselowski, Alex Bowman, Kurt Busch, and many others gave their best shot to imitate Arnold’s famous lines from The Terminator, but all of them failed miserably.

Finally, the Terminator had to come out and deliver the lines himself, as he said, “Hasta la vista, baby.”
