Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin has been wearing two hats as a driver and a team owner. Sure, it isn’t easy to handle an entire team, especially when you are racing with another team yourself. However, after two wins from his co-owned team this season, he was recently asked how he felt about the double duty he had to tackle every weekend.

When asked how it felt to take on double duty as a driver at JGR and a team owner of 23XI Racing, Hamlin said, “You know, shout out to Google Calendars for keeping everything straight. Without it wouldn’t happen. Austin Peyton, that is the world’s best scheduler over there. You know, the entire team of Pro Sports that does a great job of helping me manage those two roles. But it’s full-time.”

“Joe told me I was a dummy for doing this years ago and I’m really starting to believe it now. So you know it’s just been a great ride, though I honestly, I love the work aspect of it. I like waking up every morning, answering emails, getting on the next Zoom call, or in-person meeting to work on building in the future. Because obviously, I want my place in the sport well beyond my driving days.“

Hamlin explained how his JGR boss, Joe Gibbs, had warned him to refrain from starting his own team. Reportedly, calling him a “dummy” for doing it. But now that he went ahead with his decision and built his team with NBA legend Michael Jordan, Hamlin mentioned that he has started to believe in Gibbs’s comment.

How has the season been for Denny Hamlin and his team?

While Hamlin’s hope for the championship died, after Ross Chastain used all of his brain cells in unison at Martinsville. His co-owned 23XI Racing team’s hopes for the playoffs only came in with Kurt Busch’s car. That too, only to fade out shortly.

The Bubba Wallace and Kurt Busch starrer team endured a rocky start to the season. Wallace faced issues with his pit crew and lost out on several key races. It was only near the end of the season, Wallace bagged himself a win in Kansas. Unfortunately, it was too late for him to make it into the playoffs, which had already started. On the other hand, Busch’s season was going great. However, a crash Pocono landed him out of the car after they diagnosed a brain injury because of the incident.
