This was something the Hall of Famer himself opened up on in an interview with Sports Illustrated back in 1997, dealing with grief, the loss of his sons, the separation from his wife, and in between all of this, his strength to carry on.

“Some…incidents…in my life kept the agony, kept the agony, kept the agony on her,” Allison said. “So she packed her suitcase, and she left. I felt the agony too. But I handled it differently. I’ve always had this … this … ability to … go on.”

“I still don’t know whether I blame myself about Clifford,” Bobby says. “But racing took Clifford. And racing was my … my … whole life,” he continued.

“Racing didn’t take Davey. Judy was really bitter about the helicopter. She said racing bought it for him. I said Davey would have mowed grass to buy that helicopter. Judy said racing bought Davey the helicopter. “

After the loss of both their sons, Bobby and Judy Allison suffered a rough patch in their marriage, which ultimately led to their divorce, which according to Allison, came at the hands of a lack of mutual support.

“I think one of the things that happened to Judy and me was that we were not able to give each other the support we should have in this incredible tragedy,” Allison said.

The Hall of Famer had claimed that way before the divorce finalized the formal separation, it was clear to him what was coming, considering the couple was going “in separate directions a lot.”
