When Chase Elliott clinched the 2020 Cup Series title, to say that he was ecstatic, would be an understatement. The Hendrick Motorsports driver was practically crowing to the high heavens, and understandably so.

In light of the championship triumph, the 24-year-old even got a special call from NASCAR legend, Jeff Gordon.

For obvious reasons, there were a limited number of spectators allowed to attend the race. The good news was that the Elliott family was able to watch him win the championship.

Meanwhile, Gordon elected to stay back and watch from the comfort of his home. So, when Elliott finished his victory lap, the 49-year-old made sure to call the driver.

Speaking about the call, Chase Elliott said, “Just really appreciate him calling and reaching out and saying what he did. It’s a big moment for both of us. I think it’s kind of unique and special for he and I because we both work with Alan, and he had a run at a championship with Alan and things didn’t work out.”

What else did Chase Elliott say?

According to the 24-year-old, Gordon is one of the few people who gives proper respect to crew chief Alan Gustafson. Owing to this, the 4-time Cup Series champion is aware of how important this championship win is to Gustafson.

The 45-year-old has been in the game for a long time, especially in the capacity of a crew chief. It is also worth noting that this title is also Gustafson’s maiden title as a crew chief. With this revelation in mind, Chase Elliott declared that he was truly proud of Gustafson.
