Kyle Larson might have lost his chance to win the driver’s playoffs after his Charlotte finish. But he still has a golden opportunity to make history in the sport as the only second driver to have a split-win. And after his win at Homestead-Miami, that dream looks closer than it ever has since 1963.

But the fans don’t want it.

Kyle Larson has the golden opportunity to be the only driver to get a split title in almost 60 years. This is insane because he is the only one who managed to get this close since 1963. Moreover, he could be the only second driver to get a split title.

Unfortunately, it looks like fans of Martin Truex Jr. continue to have a bitter taste about the incident at Miami, as they aren’t too happy about the 2021 Cup Series Champion making history.

But this ended up starting a bitter rivalry between Larson and Truex Jr. fans.

Even a prominent NASCAR journalist got tangled up in this mess.

What is a split title? How will Kyle Larson win it?

A split title is a different winner in the Owner’s and Driver’s playoffs. But how will Larson get it is a little more complicated.

Well, the simplest form of it is- he could win the owner’s playoffs without being in the driver’s playoffs. Because the #5 team remains in the playoffs. Yeah, it’s a little confusing. But let’s break it down. Even though he, as a driver, lost his chance to compete for the title. His team still gathered enough points to keep him in contention.

Even Kurt Busch’s #45 car stayed in contention for the owner’s playoffs, despite not being in the playoffs. But of course, the team was recently eliminated from the owner’s playoffs too. But that didn’t happen with the #5 team. So Larson can still try to make history, and be the first driver to win a split title in the modern era of NASCAR (after 1972).

All with one condition. And that is, winning the race at Phoenix, while the highest of the 4 wins the driver’s title. Fortunately, he has enough experience on the track that hosts the playoffs’ grand final. He won last year’s title there. And only one race remains until then.
