Brad Keselowski Reflects on Nightmare First Season as Driver-Owner in the 2022 Cup Season

So far, the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season has not been very kind to Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing. In fact, driver-owner Brad Keselowski has often struggled for decent race results. This has resulted in him spending most of the season languishing outside the Top 30 in the championship.

Last weekend at the World Wide Technology Raceway, he breached the Top 30 for the first time. For a driver who has won the Cup Series in 2012, this is definitely not a good look. To make matters worse the first few races of the season witnessed his team fall afoul of the new and stricter regulations. As a result, the RFK Racing team took a massive hit in the championship standings. Speaking about how his season has gone, Keselowski confessed that things haven’t gone to plan.

He said, “No, no, not at all. We made initially a lot of headway, and we haven’t had a very good month. I felt we were going to have a really good May, and that hasn’t panned out so far. There are a number of reasons for that – some in our control and some not in our control. Charlotte, we didn’t start the race very well, and we finally got to where we were competitive and moving forward, and I thought going to have a solid run and got caught up in a wreck. A lot of people could probably say that last week. So that was unfortunate.”

What else did Brad Keselowski say about his team’s season?

According to the #6 driver, they have faced some issues. However, he is still confident that they can pull off a decent comeback and get their season on track. Keselowski observed that his team’s biggest Achilles’ heel is its speed compared to their rivals. So his main priority is to find some speed, but it is a pretty difficult task.

The last time Keselowski finished in the Top 10 was at the season-opening Daytona 500, with ninth place. Since then, he has only finished better than 20th in six of the past 15 races. Despite this, the veteran driver is still targeting victories in his first year as driver-owner. On the bright side, performances have been improving a little and getting more consistent.

Heading into the race weekend at Sonoma, both RFK cars are still hunting for playoff berths. For that, Keselowski has to win a race. Meanwhile, Chris Buescher has a waiver due to missing last weekend’s race following a positive COVID test, and also needs to win.
