It is known that the motorsport world can be brutal for the ones that show up without money. That was the exact case for Bubba Wallace as he rose up the ranks. The 23XI racing driver recently explained how he got through into the Cup Series, in a cut-throat competition sport, where money reigns supreme. He also took a dig at his fellow drivers while explaining his success in finding the perfect sponsor.

Wallace stated, Cup level is the way it used to be, used to be whoever was the best driver is like, hey, we want you to come drive? Well, the sport’s gotten really, really expensive. It’s multimillions of dollars to run a competitive cup team. And now it’s like, okay, you’re pretty good. How much money you bringing, you know?”

“It’s like some kids there’s, I’m sure we always say that there’s probably the best race car driver that was somewhere out there, that never got an opportunity to have the money to do it. And so I was kind of one of the last ones to be able to come through without money. And, you know, I had enough talent to compete.”

“Obviously, yeah, the skin colour, you know, people are like, oh, he happens to be good, too. And so that helped out. And we attracted some sponsors to some, like, for the longest time, we could never get sponsors. It was like, super frustrating because, no offence, to some of my friends, but they’re all kind of boring and cookie-cutter. Right? And I show up, and I’m ready to, you know, change up the scene. So it’s like, hey, sponsors would want that?”

Wallace finally was able to find himself a secure spot when Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin came up with their own racing team and hired him to be its first driver. Since then Wallace has also received a contract extension.

Their main reason was, “Can you imagine if he did that in real life on a track?” Well, Bubba has always been known to have a short fuse and cannot hold onto his feelings while making impulsive decisions. He surely regrets it later, but by then it is often too late.
