It is no secret that Ryan Blaney and Bubba Wallace have been close friends despite being competitors on the track. Wallace embracing Blaney after the latter’s win at Martinsville Speedway last Sunday was a testament to their friendship. Having said that, the duo loves bantering more often than not. One such case was witnessed on social media recently.

It is safe to say that the last few days have been fantastic for Blaney and his camp, as he qualified for the Championship 4 for the first time. Unfortunately, Wallace had the chance to ruin it for his close friend with his latest paint scheme revelation.

Last Sunday, Ryan Blaney made history as he registered his third win of the 2023 season to book his berth in the Championship 4. In his eighth full-time Cup Series campaign, this is the first time that he will compete in the finale. It indeed means plenty, especially after he missed out on winning even once last season.

Blaney’s performance in the 2023 playoffs has been nothing short of impressive. It only got better in the round of 8 with a sixth-place finish at Las Vegas, a runner-up finish at Homestead, and an emphatic victory at Martinsville. While he could go on and make further history on Sunday, Bubba Wallace and his Phoenix preparations must have left him jealous.

There is no doubt that Blaney has been a passionate fan of the Star Trek series. Time and again, he has expressed his love for the series and even has a Star Wars-inspired tattoo on his right leg. With enthusiasm like Blaney, it would hurt after what he witnessed with Wallace.

With Columbia Sportswear being one of the #23 driver’s main sponsors, the company was due to launch its newest Star Wars-inspired clothing line. Together with 23XI Racing, they released Wallace’s galactic paint scheme for the race at Phoenix Raceway. However, the best part of the release was the involvement of Star Wars legend Mark Hamill.

The reveal saw a video involving Wallace and Hamill. The act even saw Hamill tell the Alabama-born driver, “The Force will be with you, always.” With this promotion, Wallace got the chance to meet the legendary actor and get a photo with him, a wish Blaney would have had for a long time.

While that wasn’t enough, Wallace rubbed more salt in his wounds with his act on social media. With a meme showing Blaney staring at a photo frame involving Wallace and Hamill, the 23XI Racing driver mocked his dear friend by reacting to it. It was a funny dig, and surely the fans loved it to the core.

All said and done, it was a historic moment in Bubba Wallace’s career to meet someone of Mark Hamill’s stature. There is certainly no limit to what Ryan Blaney would have done to be in his place. While it was unfortunate, Wallace ensured he made the best of the moment with his Twitter reaction.

Amazingly, he was not the only one to enjoy it. Even the NASCAR fans took it light-heartedly with their creative comments on social media.

“This is the one you kept in the chamber”

“The best thing on the internet today and that’s saying a lot, with the cars and all”

It is indeed fun seeing the two show their healthy friendship with such timely banter. It would be interesting to see if Ryan Blaney gets a chance to connect with Mark Hamill in the near future. While that would be a dream come true, it would surely not come as close as winning the Cup Series this season.

One take at a time

I was a little kid when Dale Earnhardt said, “The winner ain't the one with the fastest car, it's the one who refuses to lose.” Years have passed and those words could not be more true. Having grown fond of motorsports at a young age, I’m strongly addicted to the adrenaline rush the sport offers.
