In recent years, NASCAR has made significant strides in enhancing the fan experience and improving the competitive nature of the sport. One such transformative change was the incorporation of stage racing, which undoubtedly revitalized the racing landscape. This innovative approach to scoring has not only heightened the excitement throughout each race but also provided drivers with more opportunities to earn points, making every lap matter.

However, stage racing has also been met with its fair share of opposition, as traditionalists argue that it disrupts the flow of races and undermines the essence of motorsports. Recently, during an interview, the defending champion, Joey Logano, spoke out in defense of the stage racing format.

He took his time to justify why fans should start appreciating stage racing. His comments came after the terrible outing at the Circuit of The Americas last weekend.

During the conversation, Logano stated, “It’s easy to look at what’s wrong and want to be better. And I appreciate people wanting to be better all the time and looking at that. But we also got to realize why we are where we are. Right? Why did we add stage brakes in the first place?”

Furthermore, Logano discussed how the introduction of stage breaks has led to a gradual addition of points throughout a NASCAR race. He highlighted that, unlike other sports such as football, basketball, and soccer, NASCAR previously lacked a scoring system during the course of the event. However, by implementing these changes, NASCAR is now aligned with other sports in terms of scoring points as the competition progresses.

The 2022 champion, elaborated on the benefits of the stage racing format in NASCAR. He mentioned that under the previous system, a driver could perform well for the majority of the race, but still end up with nothing if they crashed towards the end. The introduction of stage points, however, allows drivers to accumulate points throughout the race, thus ensuring that their performance is rewarded, while also creating more intense moments during the races.

Stage racing has seen both a supportive and dismissive fan base. However, as per Logano, fans should really start appreciating this structure of racing, instead of asking for it to be removed.

The Penske driver stated, “Well, I’m pretty sure race fans want to see that. That’s why we put it there in the first place. We can’t take it away now. Like it’s there for a reason. Because everyone complained about it. It’s there. That’s why it’s great. And we should love it and appreciate stage racing.”
