This season, NASCAR has implemented a number of changes in light of the pandemic’s spread. Now, driver Chase Elliott believes that these changes have been beneficial since things are much more simplified.

The 24-year-old recently featured on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s “Tradin’ Paint” and opened up on a variety of subjects.

When the pandemic first hit the world everything was on hold, but soon things returned to normal, including NASCAR. In fact, the stock car series was the first major sport to resume operations, albeit with a few tweaks.

Those tweaks include doing away with practice and qualifying sessions for most races. Secondly, to maintain social distancing norms, the crew rosters were trimmed and races were held on weeknights.

Speaking about the changes, Chase Elliott said, “I think we’re on a path right now that is really what NASCAR needs. I see a lot of it. To me, we’re simplifying things, which is something that I think needed to be done for a long time.

“I think as NASCAR grew, I think it kind of overgrew its shoe size a little bit over the years and we overcomplicated things.”

Chase Elliott believes that many drivers support this decision

According to him, only a handful of drivers have complained about the lack of practice. However, he suspected that critics would not complain if they won a few races with less practice.

Unfortunately for Elliott, he has had an up and down season ever since his All-Star Race victory at Bristol.

Now, he is holding on to hope that he performs better at the Michigan doubleheader weekend. Admittedly, he has a good track record at the venue, with three runner-up finishes and seven Top-10 finishes out of eight.

He concluded, “I think fine details are great when the big stuff is right. I just think as a group we’re off a little bit and you’re not talking much.

“A tenth (of a second) or two would be the difference between running ninth or 10th and battling up in the top five. When you are working that small window it is hard to not focus on the fine details, but I’m a believer in a lot of times in looking back in the general trends can sometimes help you get in the right direction, too.”
