Connor Zilisch’s trajectory in North American motorsports has been nothing short of meteoric, culminating in a significant announcement that anchors his immediate future. A multi-year agreement to race full-time in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series for Trackhouse Racing. This move solidifies his commitment to the Chevrolet camp, a relationship that has seen him dominate the 2025 Xfinity Series, claiming 10 victories through the first 30 races. But the current buzz is on his off-season endeavors.

The excitement around Zilisch making an appearance in the Supercars season finale, “Down Under” at the bp Adelaide Grand Final, was fueled by his demonstrable skill on road courses and the growing pipeline of crossover talent between NASCAR and the Australian touring car series. His planned entry was reportedly with the powerhouse team Triple Eight Race Engineering, which has historically been the standard-bearer for General Motors (Chevrolet) in Supercars. However, that talk quickly turned into a logistical impossibility.
As reported by NASCAR journalist Jeff Gluck, Zilisch confirmed that he would not be running the Supercars finale as previously speculated. The main complication, he stated, was rooted in a significant manufacturer shift within the Supercars paddock, as Triple Eight Race Engineering, which has long been synonymous with GM products like the Holden Commodore and Chevrolet Camaro, is switching to Ford after the current season. This move created a complex conflict of interest, making it difficult for Zilisch to go for a one-off race.

This move leaves a significant void for GM in Supercars, which is scrambling to solidify its future backing in the series, with Team 18 taking over as the new homologation team. The manufacturer loyalty dilemma in Zilisch’s case mirrors the complex and often dramatic history of manufacturer changes within the NASCAR landscape.

The battle in NASCAR is also raging, with the Haas Factory Team announcing it will switch from Ford to Chevrolet, establishing a technical alliance with the Chevrolet powerhouse, Hendrick Motorsports.
The absence of Zilisch from the main Supercars event is a letdown for the many American and Australian fans who were eagerly anticipating his debut. The disappointment stems from the missed opportunity to see a rising American prodigy directly challenge the Supercars regulars and share the grid with his peer, Austin Cindric.

NASCAR manufacturer mix-up costs fans an exciting debut
One fan commented, “I just read that Jesse Love is going to race Super2 at Adelaide. I’d like to see Connor go as a guest since they’re besties.” Zilisch’s close friend and NASCAR Xfinity Series rival, Jesse Love, is officially set to compete in the support category, the Dunlop Super2 Series, at the season-ending Adelaide Grand Final.

Love, who drives for Richard Childress Racing in NASCAR, will pilot a fourth entry for Terry Wyhoon’s Image Racing team, a deal facilitated by long-standing ties between RCR and Image Racing.
This established link will see the 20-year-old Love make his Australian racing debut in an ex-Brad Jones Racing ZB Commodore with backing from his sponsor, Whelen Engineering, though Zilisch will only be watching from home.
While one fan criticized the manufacturer’s choices, saying, “Somehow in the age of stickers on spec cars, OEMs are dumber about this than they ever were in the age when they actually made the cars.”
One fan added, “Bring me back to the days of Bobby Labonte driving a RCR Chevy in Busch while driving a Petty Dodge in Cup!” Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte was able to win the 1991 Busch Series title for his own team, driving an Oldsmobile and a Chevy, but by 1993 was running full-time in the Cup Series, driving a Ford for Bill Davis Racing, before ultimately landing at Joe Gibbs Racing in a Pontiac and later driving a Dodge for Richard Petty.
Another fan reminisced, “Biffle also ran a Chevy/Pontiac in the Busch series for almost half a season in 03 while full time with Roush. Kenseth also ran chevys for 2 half seasons while full time with Roush.”
In 2003, while driving full-time for Jack Roush’s Ford No. 16 in the Cup Series, Greg Biffle competed in 13 NASCAR Busch Series races, winning 1 in a Chevy for Evans Motorsports’ No. 7 car at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. This instance highlighted an era where the manufacturer of a driver’s secondary series ride was often dictated by the specific team owner and available funding, even if it conflicted with their primary Cup Series loyalty.
While one fan joked, “Connor to Supercars: “My mommy said I can’t play with you anymore”” given the driver’s age, but also a corporate parent managing his decisions.
For now, Zilisch’s Supercars debut in Adelaide remains off the table, as scheduling conflicts and team commitments keep him stateside.
