David Wilson, president of Toyota Racing Development is not impressed with the car’s performance in the NASCAR Cup Series. In a recent interview with NBC Sports, he calls the car an ’embarrassment’.

Last year, Toyota won 19 out of the 36 points races and the championship. However, this year they only took home the victory in four out of twelve Cup Series races. The domination and strength that Toyota had last year are missing.

In the interview, he was talking about the car’s performance this season. He said, “The fact that they’re only sitting on two wins right now is shocking to me. I always look at not necessarily the wins, but the potential, what is the true potential of your race cars, and that being a function of raw speed. You could argue that we’re punching above our weight right now and they’re not running at their full potential.”

He added, “Coming off two wins, I still think we’re on our back foot a little bit. I feel much better about our loss at Atlanta than our win at Martinsville.”

He explains that in the Atlanta race three Toyota cars were in the top five. Compared to Martinsville where only 1 driver was able to put the car in the top 5.

He revealed that the car’s engine drivability was terrible and they were unable to manage the new tire compound. After that, he states that if it wasn’t for Martin Truex Jr.’s strong performance they would have suffered their worst result in years. Truex Jr was able to get the car adjusted properly for the tires and took home the race win.
