COVID-19 Breaks ‘663 Consecutive Cup Series Race Starts’ Streak of Jimmie Johnson

Jimmie Johnson is set to miss his first NASCAR Cup Series race in his decades-long career. The seven-time NASCAR champion has never missed a Cup Series race. However, he won’t be able to race in the Brickyard 400 at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway because of COVID-19.
Fox NASCAR’s Bob Pockrass reveals in a series of videos that this will be Jimmie’s first race miss in his Cup Series career. He wrote in a tweet, “Jimmie Johnson will miss a NASCAR Cup Series race for the first time in his career after a positive COVID-19 test. Get well quick, 7-Time!”
After that, he said in another tweet, “Jimmie Johnson’s streak of 663 consecutive NASCAR Cup Series starts, the longest among active drivers, will end Sunday after the 7-time champion tested positive for COVID-19”

Johnson Had a Chance to equalize Jeff Gordon and Michael Schumacher

Johnson will retire from full-time NASCAR racing at the end of this season. This year at Brickyard, he would have had a chance to equalize Jeff Gordon and Michael Schumacher for a prestigious IMS record. He could have been one of the only five-time winners at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Notably, He haven’t won any major race in the last three-year. However, he was looking very competitive this season especially after the series returned from COVID-19 lockdown.

In an official statement, NASCAR revealed that If Johnson is eligible for the playoffs. He will get a special waiver of one race. However, he will not gather any points for the races he will miss because of COVID-19. They wrote, “NASCAR has granted Jimmie a playoff waiver. And we look forward to his return as he races for an eighth NASCAR Cup Series championship.”
