The race originally slated for 100 laps was unexpectedly shortened to just 75 due to heavy rain and lightning. The significance of the unexpected outcome was not lost on the NASCAR community, including NBC news anchors–a clear sign that new drivers could usurp the established order.

Despite the challenging conditions, van Gisbergen turned the competition on its head on the final lap, seizing the lead on lap 71 after a restart and overtaking Justin Haley for an incredible 1.259-second lead. In NBC coverage, 5X NBA All-Star Brad Daugherty stated, “We didn’t expect this. We thought, I thought, Chase Elliott was going to win this, right? I thought, you know. Rick … Christopher Bell was going to win… And this young man came in and did. He took it to our guys and it’s exciting because it’s new and it shows it can be done. Who’s coming next?”

In a lighthearted moment of banter, Elliott suggested van Gisbergen could head back to New Zealand and brag about their incomparable victory. Although this comment is made in good faith, the international drivers’ speed and strategy have alarmed the NASCAR drivers.
