The aftermath of the NASCAR 2024 inductees’ announcement continues to reverberate, prompting fervent discussions among fans, paddock personalities, and pundits alike. Central to these debates is Jimmie Johnson, the revered NASCAR legend boasting a staggering 7 Cup Series championships, paired with the ingenious crew chief Chad Knaus, forming one of the sport’s most dominant duos in history. This dynamic pair is poised to enter the NASCAR Hall of Fame next January.
Even Dale Earnhardt Jr., already a Hall of Famer himself, delved into the dialogue via his podcast ‘The Dale Jr. Download’, along with cohost Mike, dissecting the unanimous decision to induct Johnson and their respective viewpoints.

Fireside chat: Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mike discuss NASCAR Hall of Fame inductions
The duo engaged in a candid and spirited exchange, revealing starkly contrasting opinions on the matter. Dale Jr. began by admitting his initial annoyance at the unanimous decision but shared a change of heart upon discovering that not all past NASCAR greats had received the same treatment, mentioning names like David Pearson and Jeff Gordon.
Mike, however, took an assertive stance, defending the idea that any driver with a staggering seven championships under their belt deserves nothing less than unanimous approval. “If you win seven championships, everybody better vote for you” Mike firmly declared.
Citing Pearson, Yarborough, Walter, and Allison, Dale Earnhardt Jr. countered, underscoring the significance of win count over championships. He pointed out Johnson’s position on the wins list and highlighted Yarborough’s triumphant three-in-a-row championships before Johnson’s consecutive five-cup championship sweep.
“Cale Yarborough won three in a row before Jimmie won his five in a row. That three in a row was pretty damn amazing.”

Similarly, Denny Hamlin also took to Twitter, labeling the non-unanimous decision a “disgrace” and demanding transparency in the Hall of Fame voting process. He called for revealing the votes and removing panelists who didn’t support Johnson. “Not unanimous. What a joke a disgrace to one of the sports greatest ever. Make it public who said no and remove them from the voting panel” Denny Hamlin tweeted.
