The arrival of next-gen cars in 2022 turned the NASCAR world on its head, bringing a breath of fresh air to the sport. These cars were not just eye candy; they were a cut above in technology and aerodynamics. But this wasn’t a free lunch – the trade-off was a noticeable drop in speed. Their less-than-stellar showing on short tracks has become the subject of much chatter, prompting NASCAR giants like Dale Earnhardt Jr to jump into the fray to give short-track racing a new lease of life.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, Dale Earnhardt Jr himself has recently emerged as a vocal supporter of these next-gen cars, despite the ripples they’ve caused in the racing pond. Adding a twist to the tale, Dale Jr admitted on his podcast that he’s still finding his footing with these new models, a confession that adds a layer of complexity to his backing of them.

Dale Earnhardt Jr praises next-gen cars, despite their shortcomings

When Kenny Wallace curiously prodded Dale Earnhardt Jr for his thoughts on the new next-gen cars, Dale Jr’s response was not quite what one might expect. He expressed a fondness for these cars, especially on the mile-and-a-half tracks. He did, however, acknowledge the issue of dirty air, a problem that plagued the previous generation of cars as well.

Using the Charlotte race as a case in point, Dale Jr argued that it was the next-gen cars that added a spark to the event. “I mean, look at Charlotte. Let’s look at the World 600. The last decade Charlotte on the oval, it’s been a bit of a hard sale. So much so that we built the roval and took away one of the oval dates. Now in Jeff Glux, was it a good race pole? The World 600 was second this year. In the last several oval races at Charlotte had been probably some of the most entertaining races of the year.”

The perspective comes as a bit of a surprise, considering that Dale Jr, who last raced a few months ago at Bristol, admitted to feeling uneasy behind the wheel of a next-gen car. However, he might be cut some slack, given he has only raced part-time since 2017 and hence, the potential unfamiliarity with the nuances of the new cars.

But then comes the conundrum: how do we square Dale Jr’s endorsement of next-gen cars with the apparent decline in the excitement of short-track racing since their introduction? This very issue is why Dale Earnhardt Jr is doubling down, returning for the second consecutive year to race in the Late Model Stock at Florence Motor Speedway.

Dale Jr sets his sights on Florence Motor Speedway race

Dale Earnhardt Jr has been burning the candle at both ends to bring back the heydays of short tracks, a crusade that’s even more vital in the age of next-gen cars. His dedication has led him back to the familiar grounds of Florence Motor Speedway, where he’s been reigniting his passion for late-model stock car racing since last year.

This racing season, Dale Jr is all revved up to take the helm of the No. 3 car. The November 18th race would mark his fourth race at Florence in the last year. Dale Jr has never hidden his fondness for these gritty, well-worn tracks. “I love these worn-out race tracks. If you want to find me, that’s where I’m going to be, driving a Late Model Stock car somewhere that’s going to grind the tires off the car,” Dale Jr admitted last year.

As the drivers line up, it’s clear that Dale Earnhardt Jr is the main attraction, the one who’s sure to pull in the crowds and ramp up the excitement. His bond with Florence Motor Speedway is deep, stretching back to 1996 when he snagged a win in the Late Model Stock race. Since, last year, he has been on a mission to put Florence Speedway back on the short-track map. What are your thoughts about the actions and opinions of Dale Earnhardt Jr?
