Before strapping into a race car for hundreds of high-speed laps, Dale Earnhardt Jr. wasn’t rolling the dice on food. On an episode of his Dale Jr. Download podcast, the NASCAR Hall of Famer detailed his ultra-cautious pre-race diet. “I always try to not eat anything that might make me sick,” he said, adding that grilled chicken, Mexican food, or anything risky was strictly off-limits. “No chili… No ghost pepper sauce.” His go-to? A plain ham sandwich with just enough bread to keep his belly kind of feeling somewhat full.
Unlike marathoners or cyclists who might grab a bite mid-race, Dale Jr. sees no place for snacking at 200 mph. But when the pressure’s off and there’s no finish line ahead? That’s when Junior’s true food cravings come out. And let’s just say, it’s a full-course tribute to flavor. Now, Dale Jr. has revealed what he wants his last meal to be. And it’s a buffalo-themed bonanza!

Dale Jr.’s dream last meal is a flavor-packed feast
For his hypothetical final meal, Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t hold back. On his podcast, the NASCAR legend revealed a lineup of his favorite foods, and it’s as all-American and unpretentious as you’d expect. “I love buffalo,” Dale Jr. began, setting the tone. However, then came the reveal of multiple meal choices. Dale Jr. can’t choose just one food item and wants his plate full!
“I would get chicken wings from the 500 Club, which is a new place here.” Located around Troutman and Statesville, the 500 Club has become a low-key hit among locals. And, by Dale Jr.’s statement, clearly, among NASCAR royalty, too. “Their buffalo chicken wings are the best buffalo chicken wings that I’ve had in a long time,” Dale Jr. revealed.
But he didn’t stop there. Next on the menu? Seafood from one of his favorite escapes. “I would have buffalo shrimp from the Raw Bar in Key West,” he said. “And probably about two or three dozen oysters from there.” Dale Jr. has spent many offseasons soaking in the Keys’ laid-back charm, and clearly, the food left its mark. The Half Shell Raw Bar, a Key West institution since 1972, is renowned for its fresh seafood, including oysters and peel-and-eat shrimp, served in a casual, dockside setting.

Rounding out his feast is something from his Mooresville roots. “I’d have to get pepperoni with banana peppers from Pie in the Sky. They’re a mom-and-pop joint. It’s on Main Street in Mooresville,” Dale Jr. revealed. And it wouldn’t be complete without their signature toasted Italian sub, which TJ Majors claimed was named after Junior himself! Junior added, “I call it the Dale Jr. sub. I don’t know if they call it that anymore,” sending the room into laughter.
It’s a meal that reflects both his travels and his hometown pride. But while Dale Jr.’s dream plate is loaded with bold flavors, there’s still one item he refuses to touch. No matter the occasion.

One food Dale Jr. just can’t eat
Dale Earnhardt Jr. is known for his willingness to try all sorts of foods, from banana and mayonnaise sandwiches to raw oysters. However, there is one food he simply refuses to eat: frog legs. In 2024, on the Sports and Forks podcast with Kelly Senyei, Dale Jr. shared a vivid childhood memory that cemented his aversion to this Southern delicacy. He recalled, “One food I will never ever eat is… maybe frog legs.”
Dale Jr. recalled an incident when he was just 12 years old, and he caught his father, Dale Sr., cooking frog legs in the early hours of the day. “I remember 3:00 in the morning. I go into the kitchen and dad was standing there in his pj’s cooking frog legs in a frying pan,” Dale Jr. recalled. He further explained that he had never seen Dale Sr. cook frog legs before or after the incident.
Dale Jr., while shocked at the choice of delicacy, was happy as he got to spend some quality time with his father. Junior added, “I loved it because no one else was awake, and I had dad to myself, right? If you know my father, famous guy, and every waking moment, everybody in the world is trying to get a minute of his time.” He explained that the experience stuck with him, and even though he cherishes the memory of spending rare quiet time with his dad, he’s never been able to bring himself to eat frog legs.

This stands out because Dale Jr. is otherwise adventurous with food, famously enjoying unusual combinations like banana and mayonnaise sandwiches. He has even discussed his evolving sandwich preferences on his podcast. Yet, frog legs remain the one item he won’t touch, no matter how many times he’s asked or how common they are in Southern cuisine.
