Short-track racing has had better exposure to the world in 2023, thanks to Dale Earnhardt Jr. The icon announced at the onset of the season that he’d formed an ownership group along with fellow NASCAR names Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, and Justin Marks to buy the CARS Tour. Since then, more eyes than usual have been on the late model series. And the first year of ownership for this group hasn’t been bland by any means.

Back in July, by the virtue of SIM racer Travis ‘Moonhead’ Brown, one of the series’ drivers, Landon Huffman had lost his prized car at the Hickory Speedway. Now, Brown has brought the crash afront to memories on his “X” handle, drawing hilarious responses from Huffman and Dale Jr.

Landon Huffman is the son of former race car driver Robert Huffman, who won NASCAR’s Dash Series five times in the 90s. For the younger Huffman and his racing outfit, Huffman Racing team, 2023 has been a very bumpy ride. Mixed in different embroils since the start of the year, he reached a particular low in July. The incident occurred during a test run at the Hickory short-track when the team’s limited late-model car was being tested by Huffman’s friend Travis Brown.

Crashing against the wall, Brown totaled the car and left his marks on the wall. In a recent post, he brought the incident back up and drew responses from Dale Earnhardt Jr and Huffman.

Responding to his post, Junior took a shot at the speed at which track repairs were done at the speedway. In answer, Huffman jumped in writing, “And Management did tell us at last years banquet that there most likely would not be any major money spent until after 2023, but a bucket of paint & a brush can’t be more than $100 lol”.

Junior quickly suggested that Huffman himself would get a bucket and paint to repair the marks if he loved the track so much. He then playfully added, “If you love it you’ll get the bucket of paint and brush and go to work.”

Landon Huffman was the 2022 Hickory Speedway champion. His father too, before him, had been the champion of the track on two occasions. It’s pretty obvious that the track means much to the Huffman family. Though they probably won’t be risking committing vandalism on account of it.

During a test session this past summer, a mechanical issue in the car that has been named Frances caused its throttle to fail. As a result, the #75 car crashed into the turn 1 wall. Travis Brown, behind the wheel, had escaped without much injuries. But the car itself was damaged extensively.

Brown’s appearance with Huffman Racing in 2023, was his second year with them. Landon Huffman himself is a pretty good SIM racer. He has been a part of big events in the last few years. And the duo can often be found on iRacing in the company of each other. While the loss of the car is certainly disheartening, it is yet to be seen if Huffman will return full-time to the CARS Tour in 2024 instead of just racing for the Hickory track championship.
