In the legacy world of Kelley Earnhardt, Miller sits atop the organizational pyramid of JR Motorsports, a racing empire that’s almost as legendary as her famous brother, Dale Earnhardt Jr. As the chief executive officer of this web of racing enterprises, Kelley’s fingerprints are on nearly every aspect of the Junior Empire. But did you know that her journey into the world of racing was, well, somewhat unconventional?

During a segment of the ‘Dale Jr. Download’ podcast, Dale Earnhardt Jr., along with his co-hosts Mike Davis and Andrew, engaged in a conversation sparked by a question from a fan. The topic at hand was the competitive nature of the Earnhardt family during their upbringing.

When asked who was more competitive between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister Kelley while growing up in a racing-centric household, Dale Jr. considered the question. He reflected on his childhood, noting that he and his buddies had a relentless drive to compete in virtually anything they could find, from racing cars to skateboards and bikes. Racing was ingrained in his DNA from an early age.

In contrast, the Pied Piper of Daytona stated, “And Kelley was, you know, into her friends and, you know, makeup and teen magazines and all that stuff. She really didn’t. She kind of got the racing bug really late. She was getting out of high school and going to college, and she was going to school in Wilmington and had no interest or had shared no interest in driving a race car.”

“Dad was missing her terribly, and to persuade her to transfer from Wilmington to UNC Charlotte and finish her school there and be closer to home so he could see her, he told her he would get her a race car to race, and that’s how her racing career began,” Dale added.

When it came to motorsports and racing, the individual excelled competitively during their childhood, unlike Kelley. Both dabbled in sports, sharing an intense hatred for losing. Witnessing Kelley’s vulnerable moments after poor performances, they recognized their similarities.

The kids of ‘Intimidator’ jointly own an Xfinity Series team that commands almost as much attention as the leading Cup Series giants. Kelley Earnhardt Miller now stands front and center, steering the wheels that power JR Motorsports and all of Junior’s other racing ventures. But her journey in racing didn’t start with her brother’s fame; it began years before, on the racetracks themselves.

While Dale Earnhardt Jr. naturally attracted fans’ interest from a young age due to his lineage, Kelley, too, had racing woven into her DNA. She spent several years racing late models and could often be found at race tracks when she wasn’t behind the wheel.
