When it comes to NASCAR, the one thing that is always on the top of the list is the Earnhardt name. And a true testament to that fact is the presence of JR Motorsports. Today, the team is one of the most esteemed racing organizations in the stock car racing circuit. Dale Earnhardt set up shop for this organization in the shed of Dale Earnhardt Inc's property as a marketing division for his racing team. Originally, JR Motorsports only had one employee. JR Motorsports was originally founded in 1998. However, it wasn't until 2002 that it became a racing team. Currently, the team is owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., his sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller and NASCAR Hall of Famer and <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/category/nascar/hendrick-motorsports/">Hendrick Motorsports</a> owner <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/rick-hendrick/">Rick Hendrick</a>.

The team was originally a part of the Dale Earnhardt Inc. However, a few years after its formation, when Dale Earnhardt Jr signed as a driver with Hendrick Motorsports, he and team owner decided to join hands in formation of what is now known as JR Motorsports.

Reports dating back to 2017 suggested that Dale Earnhardt had earned close to a whopping $400 million from just his salary, endorsements, and share of race winnings. Dale Jr even made it to the Forbes list of the World's Highest Paid Athletes in 2017. In the back of such hard-hitting figures, it is safe to assume that a chunk of Dale Jr's wealth definitely goes to the racing team.

As of now there are five drivers who compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with JR Motorsports, namely, Sam Mayer, <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/Justin-Allgaier/">Justin Allgaier</a>, Sammy Smith, Brandon Jones and Dale Earnhardt Jr himself.

Sam Mayer joined the team in 2022, driving the No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro. And the driver has been a part of the team ever since. Recently, the driver also signed a contract extension to stay with JRM in 2024, marking a third full-time season with the team.

37-year-old Justin Allgaier is also one of the promising talents that drivers for JRM driving the No. 7. Joining the team way back in 2016, Allgaier has been a consistent performer and even advanced to the Championship 4 in five of the last seven seasons. He also finished a career-best second in the final standings in 2020.

Furthermore, young talent Brandon Jones joined Dale Jr's team ahead of the 2023 season, replacing Noah Gragson, who moved to Legacy Motor Club that same year. The racer currently drives the No. 9 car. <em>“To watch how competitive JRM has been over the years is really impressive. They’re a threat to win every week, and one of the premier teams in our series. I’m so thankful to Dale (Earnhardt Jr.), Kelley and Mr. Hendrick for allowing me to be part of it,” </em>the 27-year-old driver had shared at the time.

As for the owner of the team, Dale Jr originally used to driver under the Dale Earnhrdt Inc and has stayed as a consistent name in the tourney ever since.

However, the latest driver to join the team is Sammy Smith in 2024. In September 2023, an official press release revealed the news about the multi-year contract. However, it is currently unclear how long the contract will last. Sharing his excitement about the joining, team owner Dale Earnhardt had said, <em>"Sammy is a great fit for our program and will mesh well with our other drivers. He's a young, talented racer who's willing to learn and carries himself with a lot of professionalism. He has a bright future ahead. I'm excited for our team to help him continue his journey." </em>

As an already successful team making its mark in NASCAR's second division, many have wondered why JRM hasn't made its move to the <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/category/nascar/nascar-cup-series/">Cup Series</a> yet. While an exact reason for this distance cannot be ascertained as of now, fans will be happy to know that the team does have a plan to move to the top tourney in future. In fact, Dale Jr even expressed his wishes to buy a charter on multiple occasions on his podcast, the Dale Jr Download. However, the rising prices of NASCAR charters proved to be a hindrance to that plan.

Several media reports even claimed that the team owner was scouting an opportunity to join the Cup Series. However, the Race Team Alliance (RTA)’s current revenue negotiations with NASCAR and the current NASCAR Cup Series teams operating at a loss, didn't paint a hopeful picture either.

The first-ever NASCAR race was held at Charlotte Fairgrounds Speedway on June 19, 1949 and Christian David "Jim" Roper was the victor after racer Glen Dunaway was disqualified for making illegal adjustments to his car.

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>Why is it named Cup Series? </strong></h2>
The NASCAR Cup Series is the pinnacle of the racing arrangement in the NASCAR classification. The arrangement started in 1949 and was called the Strictly Stock Division. The series was subsequently known as the Grand National Division from 1950 to 1970.

Then, in 1971, it started renting its naming rights to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and was alluded to as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series till 2003. From the next year onwards, the series came to be known as the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series till 2007 after a partnership with Nextel.

Sprint obtained Nextel in 2005 and 2008 saw the arrangement being renamed as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Sprint remained the sponsor of the NASCAR Cup from 2008 to 2016. It was reported in December 2016 that Monster Energy would be the sponsor; therefore, the arrangement was renamed the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series from 2017 to 2019.

However, after decades of name changes, in 2017, the organization finally decided to shed off its old image and simply be named as the NASCAR Cup Series, with series sponsors being called 'Premier Partners'.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>What is the format of the Cup Series?</strong></h2>
The NASCAR points system has been a complicated affair to say the least. Over the years, the organization has tried several iterations, namely the Latford system, the Chase and the current elimination playoffs format among others, to discern one that would be fair to each driver.

While the earlier system saw drivers being awarded points on the basis of prize money in a particular race, in 1972 a new format was introduced. This time the points were awarded on the basis of laps completed. However, even that came with its own flaws and just two years later, in 1974, the organization introduced point calculation based on a mathematical formula. However, given the complexity of the equation, Bill France Jr, the former CEO of NASCAR decided to step in and call upon his close friend Bob Latford, to come up with an efficient way, which later came to be known as Boot Hill Format or the Latford Model.

With equal points awarded in all races, as New York Times aptly put it: <em>"Mr. Latford set up his points scale to reward consistency rather than flashes of brilliance, and drivers seem to like it that way."</em>

This system was perhaps the longest-running one during that time, being replaced in 2003, by The Chase format. Currently, the NASCAR Cup Series operates on the Playoff Format. The schedule consists of 31 oval races, 4 road course races, one street track race, and 4 non-championship races to be held on ovals. This also includes 16 playoff races, with four elimination rounds, namely, Round of 16, Round of 12, Round of 4 and Championship 4.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Cup Series Teams</strong></h2>
As of 2024, the NASCAR Cup Series has 16 full-time teams participating and three manufacturers, namely Toyota, Chevrolet and Ford. As for the team with the most number of victories and championship, Hendrick Motorsports has has an undebatable upper hand, with 305 Cup Series wins and 14 drivers championships.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Cup Series Venue</strong></h2>
The first championship race was reportedly held at Martinsville Speedway, a half-mile oval, on October 16, 1949. Currently, the final race of a Cup season is held at the Phoenix Raceway, which is a one-mile, low-banked tri-oval race track located in Avondale, Arizona, near Phoenix.

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Cup Series Championship</strong></h2>
The NASCAR Cup Series hosts three different championship under one name: The Driver's Championship, the Owner's Championship and the Manufacturer's Championship. The driver's championship as the name suggests is the award given to the driver that has emerged as the winner at the end of a season. On the other hand, the Owner's Championship aims to reward the team at the top of the points standings. The driver with the most championship wins are Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson. Additionally, Rick Hendrick-owned Hendrick Motorsports has won a record-breaking 14 championships till date.

On a similar note, the Manufacturer's Championship sees Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEMs) being awarded a championship based on how races their cars managed to dominate and the points accumulated. In this regard, US-based manufacturer Chevrolet has racked up the most Cup Series wins at 42, followed by Ford at 17, and Toyota at 3.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Cup Series Track Types</strong></h2>
As mentioned earlier, the NASCAR Cup series organizes its races on four different types of tracks, namely, Intermediate tracks, Superspeedways, Short Tracks and Road Courses.

When it comes to Intermediate tracks, it simply means <em>"any track greater than one mile in length, with the exception of both Daytona and Talladega" </em>according to the official NASCAR website and currently the Cup Series drivers compete on the following Intermediate tracks/Speedways :

While NASCAR has several racetracks that it competes on, there are a couple venues that are held in high regards. Currently there are four such venues/races, namely the Daytona 500 held at the Daytona International Speedway, the Coca-Cola 500 held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway , the Brickyard 400/Verizon 200 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway.

Till date, Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman and retired NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon has the most number of Crown Jewel race wins (21), followed by Legacy Motor Club team owner Jimmie Johnson (14) and retired NASCAR driver Bobby Allison (13).

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Cup Series Cars</strong></h2>
NASCAR is an ever-evolving sport and till date, there have been several iterations of the cars used during races. If we go back to the very inception of the sport, the first kind of vehicle that was used used to be called Generation - 1 (1948-1966), followed by Generation - 2 (1967-1980) and Generation - 3 (1981-1991). Later the Generation - 4 (1992 to 2007) was introduced , and then Generation - 5 (2007 -2012) and Generation - 6 (2013-2021) came into play. And currently, NASCAR features the Generation - 7 car that is also known as the Next-Gen.

Anothe notable model was the Generation - 5. Dubbed as the<em> "Car of Tomorrow"</em>, this model featured flaunted prominent front splitters under the bumpers and larger rear wings. Apart from that, according to NASCAR, the car also had <em>"significant safety advancements and a return to symmetrical bodies". </em>

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Cup Series debut at the Street Course</strong></h2>
The NASCAR Cup Series has come a long way since its initial days. The organization has always been open to developments and one of the most exciting ones came in 2023,when the tourney made its Street Course debut at Chicago.

In a bid to turn make the schedule even more exciting, NASCAR officials were reportedly in talks with Chicago authorities for a number of years, with one attempt of a Chicago street race even dating back to the 1980s. However, owing to political pressure, that plan failed to materialize. Now, fast forward to four decades later and authorities were finally geared up to host an exciting, first-of-its-kind race in downtown Chicago.

Designed by race simulation video game developer iRacing, the race aimed to showcase the city's major landmarks such as the Buckingham Fountain, the Grant Park and the Soldier Field Stadium, among others.

The first iteration of the race came in July of 2023, with New Zealand born driver Shane van Gisbergen clinching victory in his first-ever NASCAR race. If that's not iconic, what is?

NASCAR's Xfinity Series needs no introduction. Touted as the second-tier division of the stock car racing organization, the tourney has been a long-time contributor to thrilling races. The minor league of NASCAR, the Xfinity Series is considered a stage for young drivers to venture up to the association's high-level hustling, the Cup Series. The Xfinity Series races are held as a feeder race on the day preceding a Cup Series occasion planned for the end of that week.

Currently, the series hosts races at the same locations as the NASCAR Cup Series which include Intermediate tracks, Superspeedways, Short Tracks, and Road Courses.

The Series' inaugural session took place in 1982 when long-time NASCAR sponsor Anheuser-Busch decided to back a newly reformed late-model sportsman series with its Budweiser brand. The first-ever race in the division was held at the Daytona International Speedway, and the iconic legend Dale Earnhardt was the race winner.

As to when the series actually emerged, we will have to go back to 1950 when the NASCAR's Sportsman Division, the fourth series after the Modified, Roadster and Strictly Stock division, was formed as the organization's short track race division.

<h2 style="text-align: center"><span style="font-weight: 400"><strong>Why is it named Xfinity Series?</strong> </span></h2>
Today, what is known as the NASCAR Xfinity Series has had quite a few name changes over the decades. After its official debut in 1982 with Budweiser as a partner, in 1984, the series moved to being sponsored by Anheuser-Busch's Busch Beer brand instead. It is then that it came to be known as the Busch Grand National Series. However, the brewing company dropped the sponsorship in 2007 until subsequently, in 2008, insurance and financial services company Nationwide Insurance took the vacant spot and renamed the tourney the 'Nationwide Series'.
<p style="text-align: left">After the end of the insurance company's 7-year contract, in 2014, Comcast announced that it was going to serve as a sponsor for the series through its cable television and internet brand Xfinity, renaming it the <b>Xfinity Series.</b></p>

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>What is the format of the Xfinity Series?</strong></h2>
The Playoff format was introduced in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2016. While it is similar to that of the Cup Series, the second-tier division uses a three-round playoff format instead of four, with 12 drivers in contention. At the end of the first two rounds, four drivers with the lowest season points of the 12 (and then 8) drivers, are eliminated. In the 2024 Xfinity Series season, there are a total of 33 races, consisting of seven playoff races and 26 regular season races.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Xfinity Series Teams</strong></h2>
Reportedly, more than 35 drivers participate in the NASCAR Xfinity Series every year, with three OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer), namely, Toyota, Ford and Chevrolet.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Xfinity Series Venue</strong></h2>
The first-ever championship race back in the Xfinity Series inaugural season in 1982 was held at the Martinsville Speedway on October 31. The speedway is a short track and is 0.526-mile in length. Currently, the Xfinity Series championship race is held at Phoenix Raceway at Avondale, Arizona. In 2024, it is scheduled to take place on November 9.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship</strong></h2>
1982 was a good year for NASCAR driver Jack Ingram. Nicknamed 'The Iron Man', Ingram was the first-ever championship title holder in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, then called the <b>Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series. </b>As for the defending champion, Stewart-Haas Racing's Cole Custer clinched the championship in 2023, beating JR Motorsports' Justin Allgaier and Sam Mayer.

There are several drivers who have shown their dominance in the Xfinity Series. However, unlike the Cup Series where icons like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson left others behind with seven championship wins each, NASCAR's second-division has had a more even field when it comes to title wins. Drivers like Tyler Reddick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Randy LaJoie, Larry Pearson, Jack Ingram and Sam Ard have each won two championships each, with the latest two-time champion being Tyler Reddick, in 2018 and 2019.

However, when it comes to Xfinity Series race wins, the balance is clearly tipped toward one side. With a staggering 102 race wins (with the latest victory coming at Atlanta in February, 2024) Kyle Busch sits atop leaving behind Mark Martin at 49 and Kevin Harvick at 47.

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Xfinity Series Cars</strong></h2>
Just like the NASCAR Cup Series, the organization's second division has also seen many changes when it comes to its racing vehicles. Among them was the Gen 4 car, that made its debut in the division in 1992 and stayed for almost two decades, till 2010. The Gen 4 car was evidently different from all the other cars used as the model removed all "stock" aspects from stock car racing and made it aerodynamically sensitive.

As per reports, the <em>"Generation 4 cars feature highly modified bodies with teams spending hours in the wind tunnel to gain aerodynamics.<sup id="cite_ref-:1_3-0" class="reference"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_4_(NASCAR)#cite_note-:1-3">[3]</a></sup> The bumpers, nose and tail are composed of molded fiberglass based on production counterparts".</em>

Another notable model was the 'Car of Tomorrow' that ran in the Xfinity Series since 2010-full time. This model flaunts prominent front splitters under the bumpers and larger rear wings. Apart from that, according to NASCAR, the car also has <em>"significant safety advancements and a return to symmetrical bodies". </em><em> </em>
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>How are Cup Series cars different from Xfinity Series cars?</strong></h2>
Just like the two divisions are distinctly different, even the vehicles used differ in various aspects. Unlike the Cup Series that currently uses the 'Next Gen' car, the Xfinity Series car uses a vehicle that five lug nuts holding the wheels in place, as opposed to the Cup Series car that uses wider tires with a single lug nut. Apart from that, the Cup Series cars have a power output of 670 hp as compared to the Xfinity's 650 hp.

When it comes to the gearbox, the Next Gen cars have a 5-speed sequential shifter in use, whereas Xfinity vehicles have a traditional H-Pattern 4-speed shifter.

<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>How is the Xfinity Series different from the Cup Series?</strong></h2>
The NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series don't just differ in their names but also the way they operate among several other things. While NASCAR's top divisions has 39 races in a season. the Xfinity season has 33. As for the vehicles used for racing purposes, Xfinity uses the Chevrolet Camaro while the Cup Series makes use of the Chevrolet Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Toyota also has two different models for the Cup and Xfinity with the Camry and Supra respectively. Ford also manufactures two different types of Mustangs for the two series.

The two divisions also have a significant difference when it comes to the prize money. If we look at the 2024 Talladega Superspeedway race that took place on April 21, 2024, the Xfinity race had race winning prize of <b> $1,479,274</b>, while the Cup Series winning driver was slated to receive <b>$8,234,125. </b>

Similarly, the 2023 Cup series champion purse was reportedly a hefty amont of <b>$11,143,232. </b>As for the Xfinity Series champion purse, while no official figures have surfaced, it has been deemed to less than that of the Cup Series prize pool.
<h2 style="text-align: center"><strong>NASCAR Xfinity Series Outside the United States of America</strong></h2>
As an organization, NASCAR has always pushed towards globalization by hosting its races in different places around the world. One such effort came in 2005 when the Xfinity Series (then called the Busch Series) hosted their first-ever Mexico City race. And like the true champion that Martin Truex Jr was, he grabbed the race win expertly.

And just two years later, retired Cup Series veteran Kevin Harvick claimed another overseas win when the Busch Series went to Canada. The driver even beat hometown star Patrick Carpentier to claim the series' first-ever race in the country

Dale Jr along with local boosters and state officials have been pushing hard for years to revive the venue. Eventually, they succeeded in reviving the Speedway with a late-model stock race in August 2022. Dale Earnhardt Jr was taking part in a late-model stock race for the first time since 1997. For this historic race, he drove a green no. 3 Sun Drop Chevrolet which bore a throwback paint scheme resembling the late model he used to drive in the early 1990s. Most notably, it was his first race at North Wilkesboro since 1995. After qualifying sixth, Dale Jr stayed in and around the top 10 positions. Unfortunately, midway through the race, his rear quarter panel sustained some damage. Despite the event, he came back strongly to finish third, lagging just behind second-placed Mason Diaz and the winner of the race, Travis Kvapil. Dale Earnhardt Jr and the plane crash It was on August 15, 2019, that Dale Jr was traveling with his wife Amy, just over a year-old daughter Isla and their family dog on their private Cessna aircraft. While attempting to land at an airport in Elizabethton, Tennesse, the aircraft crashed because of issues with the landing gear and a section of the right wing. Unfortunately, the plane ran off the runway and went 400 feet down a hill before slamming through a chain-link fence. The aircraft eventually caught fire but all five passengers including the two pilots and the dog escaped in time through the main cabin door. Luckily, all of them survived with no major injuries suffered because of the crash. Junior was back in action at Darlington Raceway just two weeks after the race. Back then, he said, &#8220;It was a very tough experience to go through. I try not to get into that, think about (it happening to my family) too much. Things happen for a reason. You just try to learn from it and move on. Dale Jr added, ?I love my daughter so much and enjoy being around her and look forward to watching her grow up and experiencing a lot of things with her going forward. That just made you realize that that much more. I?m just thankful and ready to live our lives.? What is Dale Earnhardt Jr doing post-retirement You can take the driver away from the racing but you cannot take the racing away from the driver. That has been the case with Dale Jr post his retirement from the NASCAR Cup Series in 2017. Despite hanging his helmet, he has been quite actively involved in off-track ventures. He has been seen regularly featuring for NBC as a commentator and as a NASCAR analyst. As of now, the foundation has donated $1.2 million to build the Martin Truex Jr Foundation Children's Emergency Department at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and the Sherry Strong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic at Novant Health Presbyterian Main in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In September 2023, the NASCAR world was hit with the heartbreaking news of Truex Jr's longtime partner Shelley Pollex's passing after an almost decade-long battle with cancer.

<em>“I would like to extend my deepest condolences to her entire family, who have shown incredible strength and resilience throughout her battle.”</em>

However, not everybody took to this press release kindly. <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/nascar-news-this-is-as-cold-as-it-gets-danica-patrick-insensitive-dig-at-martin-truex-jr-upon-ex-girlfriend-tragic-demise-angers-nascar-world-sherry-pollex/">Former NASCAR racer Danica Patrick shared her criticism about it on social media at the time and wrote</a>, <em>"I avoid negativity on social at almost all costs. Almost…But this the most insensitive disconnected statement from a guy that I have never liked. And obviously for good reason. I don’t care what happened between them but this is as cold as it gets. A PR rep wrote this guaranteed. You’re free from this now sherry.”</em>

Being a 43-year-old driver racing at high speeds can definitely be physically taxing. Perhaps that explains why Martin Truex Jr has been mulling retirement over the past few years. The first time when the news surfaced was in 2022. While the driver admitted that he was actually considering retirement, he officially announced his return to the Cup Series next year.

<em>“I will be back in the 19 next year. At the end of the day, this is really what I want to do right now,”</em> Truex Jr has informed at the time. The driver also returned to the 2024 as a full-time driver. However, when we come to his actual retirement plans, the driver is not yet sure what he's going to do. During a pre-race <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/daytona-500/">Daytona 500</a> presser, when asked if he was going to extend his career, Truex Jr answered, <em>“Yeah, probably. I have no idea what I’m doing next year.”</em>
