It is no secret that Dale Earnhardt Jr has a lot of respect for his late father, Dale Sr. So when the question arose about people’s favorite sports celebration of all-time, Dale Jr jumped in immediately. He insisted that the 1998 Daytona 500 will forever be the greatest celebration in his mind.

This is because his father finally won the race after nearly 20 years of trying. When Dale Earnhardt went to Victory Lane, he received a guard of honor, with everyone applauding him. It was also the third time he won at the Daytona International Speedway. However, his last two wins at the iconic track were for the Coke Zero Sugar 400.

Sadly, that would be the last time he ever won at the speedway. Make no mistake, he stormed to seven Cup Series championships and an astounding 76 wins. However, the Daytona 500 always eluded him until that 1998 season. Tragically, his life would be cut short at the 2001 edition of the Daytona 500.

What about his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr?

Admittedly, while he has not reached the same level of success, Dale Jr managed to take less time to win the Daytona 500. That triumph came in 2004, during his 5th attempt at the iconic race. To make matters even sweeter, Dale Earnhardt Jr managed to do it again in 2014, a full decade later.

Although he has a mere 26 wins to his name, at least he can boast that he won more Daytona 500s than his father. Earlier this month, Dale Earnhardt Jr was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He gained his place along with Red Farmer and the late Mike Stefanik. To make things even sweeter, his concrete signature was placed alongside his father’s and Richard Childress’ own signature. Although Dale Jr has not been overly successful on the track, he has built a strong legacy away from it.
