The year was 1997, and the occasion was the year’s Daytona 500 race. Many people widely regard it as one of the most consequential races of the season. While the race had a star-studded presence of the veterans of the sport, what happened in the race was unanticipated by everyone. At just 25, Jeff Gordon outperformed others (including the legendary Dale Earnhardt) to win the Daytona 500, achieving an illustrious feat in his young career.

As time passed by, the Daytona 500 increasingly became an event where inexperienced drivers put up impressive performances. Austin Cindric achieved the monumental feat by winning the race in 2022, while Harrison Burton repeated what Cindric did this year. In the shadows of Burton’s success and a controversial move, another inexperienced driver impressed the fans with his driving skills. It was Parker Retzlaff.

What was Parker Retzlaff’s ultimate Daytona wish?

During the last laps of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, Parker Retzlaff was gliding through with a pack of other cars in his No. 62 Chevrolet Camaro for Beard Motorsports. Just then, he pushed the car in front of him, the No. 21 of Harrison Burton. The extra push helped the Wood Brothers Racing ace driver to get past other cars and win the race. However, they incurred a big loss in the process. The push resulted in a defeat for another Chevrolet car and it was Kyle Busch‘s No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro!

And, as expected, Parker Retzlaff’s last lap moves stoked controversy in the racing community. The racing community was divided on whether Parker Retzlaff intentionally made the move or not. Talking about his Daytona experiences with Carla Metts Gebhart on Dale Jr’s Dirty Mo Media, the 21-year-old accepted, “If I could go back and change it I would have you know helped Chevy and all then put a Chevy in the playoffs. But I also don’t want to just give up for everybody who’s supported me and just wanted to give them an excellent result.”

The youngster seemed concerned about the social media uproar that his Daytona move has created. Highlighting the kind of person he is in real life, Retzlaff further added, “I mean, I don’t know. I hate being the person to cause all this I guess drama and mess on Twitter. But once again, I did whatever I thought was best for people who’ve supported me.” The Humbleness and down-to-earth character of the youngster visibly impressed NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr., “Seems like a really good dude.” the 49-year-old exclaimed.

A common factor between both the racers is their love and comfortability at the Daytona International Speedway. While Dale Earnhardt Jr., in his long and illustrious career, has won 4 races on the historic racetrack. Parker Retzlaff, too, has impressed on Daytona International Speedway every time he has raced there. His career-best P4 finish also came on the same racetrack where he impressed everyone at the Coke Zero Sugar 400.

The way ahead for the young prodigy

Parker Retzlaff is eager to move past this controversy and get back to focusing on his racing career. Yet, what he did for Burton will be remembered fondly. In the post-race press conference, Burton had nothing but praise for the Beard Motorsports driver.

He said,  “(Parker) did one of the best jobs I’ve ever seen pushing. He had me crossed up a few times where I was sideways out of control, I could tell even to the restart he gave me space enough to where I could gather the car and then push me again. You see a lot of guys just kind of run through you in that moment, especially at the end of these races. Huge hats off to him. I owe him, I don’t know how old he is, a beer if he’s old enough, or what. He did a great job, for sure.”

The youngster is carving out a decent career for himself in NASCAR. Retzlaff pursued his interest in racing as a career in the year 2019 when he was just 16 years old. He started racing in the ARCA Menards Series East as the no.74 for the Visconti Motorsports. His association with the team and the car continued in the ARCA Menards Series West and ACRA Menards Series before moving out to the Xfinity series.

Impressed by his early performances, Jordan Anderson Racing brought Parker Retzlaff into the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2022. Since then, the 21-year-old has made a name for himself, becoming a full-time racer in the series. Over the past three years, he’s competed in 63 Xfinity races, earning 12 top-ten finishes—a testament to his growing talent.

This year, Retzlaff had a taste of the Cup Series, racing in two events. One of those was the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway, where he piloted the No. 66 Ford Mustang for MBM Motorsports, and the other remains the controversial Daytona. As he continues to build his career, it’s exciting to see where his journey in NASCAR will take him next.
