The state of South Carolina has issued an executive order recently that could allow fans at the Southern 500 weekend at Darlington Raceway.

The Southern 500 Cup Series is scheduled to be held on September 6 while the Xfinity Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200 is scheduled to be held a day prior on September 5.

New order allows a limited number of fans at Darlington

The current order issued by Governor Henry McMaster states that venues having large gatherings such as sports stadiums can host either 250 people or 50% of their posted occupancy, whichever is less.

This can be done provided everyone in attendance is wearing a mask and the social distancing measures are in line with COVID-19 guidelines are being followed.

It is being reported that Darlington Raceway organizers are still working with the state authorities on whether fans could be allowed for the labor-day weekend races.

The order does allow them to work with the state and get an exemption, allowing fans at the venue during a holiday, but in line with the restrictions on the number of people permitted.

Despite the restrictions that allow only a limited number of fans, the Darlington Raceway still stands to gain, if this is compared to the situation they were in when races were held there in May.

Two NASCAR Cup Series races and one Xfinity Series race was held in May, and no fans were allowed back then due to the Coronavirus situation.

Given the same, it is not expected that they would move the race to another venue.

FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass tweeted on those lines on Monday and said that a decision concerning fan attendance was still being made.

“Darlington still working with state officials on whether can have fans for the playoff opener on Labor Day weekend. Order does allow ability to work with state for an exemption. I wouldn’t expect the gathering limit would force them to move race, considering allowed May races,” Pockrass wrote.

Almost 12,000 fans were in attendance at New Hampshire last weekend during the Cup Series race.

Michigan will not have any fans witnessing the races this weekend, while only a limited number will be allowed at Daytona International Speedway later this month.
