Denny Hamlin irked by the NASCAR Hall of Fame

Last month, NASCAR put out a list of 15 drivers who were eligible to be Hall of Fame inductees. Nominated for the coveted honor, Jimmie Johnson was picked from the Modern-era ballot. Despite receiving the highest honor, Jimmie Johnson’s HoF induction became a highly debated topic, as he faced the same disgrace that once befell Jeff Gordon.

To give context, Jeff Gordon was inducted into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame for the Class of 2019. Boasting an achievement-packed racing career, Gordon secured 96% of the ballot votes falling short of a unanimous decision.

Having collected 53 out of the 57 ballot votes, Jimmie Johnson too fell short of a unanimous decision, finding himself in the same bracket as Jeff Gordon. The voting panel’s decision maddened JGR driver Denny Hamlin after he caught wind of Johnson securing only 93% of the ballot votes.

Expressing his displeasure, Hamlin put out a tweet writing, Not unanimous. What a joke a disgrace to one of the sports greatest ever. Make it public who said no and remove them from the voting panel..

But Hamlin wasn’t the only one who was vexed by the development. Posting on Twitter, Jeff Gluck wrote, “Asked by @bobpockrass about the four people who didn’t vote for him, Jimmie Johnson says he’d love to know who they are. SAME. Tell us, @nascar. (And then kick them off the voting panel.)”

With multiple factions of the NASCAR community irked by the development, fans too had a lot to say about the panel member’s controversial decision.

Fans call out NASCAR’s erratic voting panel

Responding to Denny Hamlin’s tweet, many fans echoed the 23XI Racing co-owner’s thoughts. Drawing similarities between Jimmie Johnson’s and Jeff Gordon’s nomination, one fan commented, “Jeff Gordon was also not unanimous and I was mortified to be in that voting room.”

Feeling Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt were dealt the same injustice, another fan wrote, “For some reason all the voters can’t agree that Petty, Earnhardt, and him should be unanimous. I wonder what they have against these guys.” Here are some more noteworthy reactions from dedicated fans.

“To those 4 Voters, Jeff Gordon’s Check is in the Mail. [winking emoji] [devil face emoji]”

“Honestly when I saw this I thought it was a joke at first. How could a Seven time Champion not be unanimous? It is more likely that we never see that again in our sport.”
