In a thrilling finish on Sunday, Denny Hamlin triumphed at Dover International Speedway, clinching his third win in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. However, despite getting three chequered flags over the past 11 races, Hamlin actually visited the victory lane over three times, including once as an owner. And what can be better than that, right? Well, Denny Hamlin couldn’t be happier even if it came at his own expense.

Denny Hamlin boasts his high number of Victory Lane visits in 2024

Last weekend’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway proved to be a rollercoaster ride for Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing. Despite a disappointing finish that saw him end up in the 37th position after a crash, Hamlin found himself in victory lane celebrating Tyler Reddick’s historic win. The driver aptly summarized the feeling on social media, writing, “Even when I lose, I win.”

Moving forward to this Sunday, Hamlin himself clinched victory, once again finding his way to the victory lane. In a post-race interview at Dover, Hamlin reflected on his contrasting victory lane celebrations. He said,

“It’s been a good season. I don’t know how else to explain it. You know, to be in five Victory Lanes in the first… I don’t know how many… what race is this, 11 or 12 or something. So, I mean half of them we’ve been in Victory Lane, and the other ones, I’ve been right there with a shot to win them.”

Furthermore, the 23XI Racing co-owner talked about having a good winning streak and why it is important to celebrate every single win. He continued, “So, it feels good in the groove right now for sure and certainly feel like you want celebrate these, right? ‘Cause you just never know if it’s your last or anything like that.”

But surely, being the bigger person and smiling for his driver’s win despite suffering a failure has got to be hard. The #11 driver talked about that very ordeal as he discussed how things went at Talladega!

Reflecting on his tumultuous weekend at Talladega that saw a multi-car pileup triggered by Erik Jones relegate him out of contention at P37, Hamlin delved into his emotional journey during the race in one of the episodes of his Actions Detrimental podcast.

Describing the sudden shift in emotions as he found himself at the back of the pack while Reddick crossed the finish line with a last-lap pass, Hamlin revealed the internal struggle he faced. He explained that his emotions went from “wanting to get the hell out of there, to suddenly being happy and excited.”

After his win at Dover, Hamlin revealed that currently, he is just focused on moving the tally up and getting as many wins as possible. However, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver admitted that the two wins hit differently. He explained, “(Last) Sunday was…it’s very very hard to just flip a switch and be bummed about your day and then all of a sudden, okay be excited. It is just a little different when you win it yourself versus when you’re a car owner. It just feels different but certainly, we’ve been on a good run.”

Hamlin’s three wins this season have placed him in a tie with Daytona 500 champion William Byron. Despite his storied career, Hamlin lacks a Cup Series title and is all prepared for either triumphant success or heartbreaking disappointment as the 2024 season progresses. However, now he’ll certainly try to get all those victory lane visits for himself instead of his team!
