Petty had held the record for over three decades, so it was a big deal for Johnson to surpass it. However, Petty made some comments that were interpreted as being critical of Johnson’s driving style, saying that he “couldn’t drive a nail in a board.”

Johnson responded by saying, “I think the world of Richard Petty and what he’s done for our sport, but I don’t think he’s really relevant to what’s going on today.” This led to a lot of backlash from fans, who accused Johnson of disrespecting a racing legend.
