In one of the recent of his podcast, Hamlin candidly admitted that he purposely made contact with Ross Chastain during the race at Phoenix Raceway. And this confession caught NASCAR’s attention, resulting in a fine and a point penalty.

Denny Hamlin gives his reaction to the NASCAR penalty

Last week, NASCAR announced a $50,000 fine and a 25 driver point penalty for Hamlin. Citing that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver violated NASCAR Rule Book’s section 4.4.B, the governing body shared that it found Hamlin’s actions detrimental to stock car racing and NASCAR. And since then, fans have been waiting for Hamlin’s response to it all.

Sharing his views on the chain of events, Hamlin revealed in the recent episode of Actions Detrimental that NASCAR’s decision last week was interesting for him. Furthermore, he added that he couldn’t believe that talking to fans through his podcast would result in any kind of penalty for him.

He said, “Certainly didn’t believe talking to the fans here… listening to this podcast would result in any kind of penalty of any sorts. But to my surprise, that happened.”

Denny Hamlin decides to appeal the decision

NASCAR’s decision last week was not the only surprising thing for Denny Hamlin fans. After a lot of consideration, and initially denying that he would be taking any action, Hamlin revealed that he would be appealing NASCAR’s penalty. And as one would expect, this did not sit well with all NASCAR fans.

And even though the Hamlin fans were happy to see the driver admitting to wrecking Chastain at Phoenix, they were confused by the JGR driver’s decision to appeal. Citing that he himself admitted to his mistakes, a few NASCAR fans on Twitter accused him of going against his own word.
