Saturday’s Drive for the Cure 250 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course had fans on the edge of their seats. In a nail-biting finish at the Charlotte ROVAL, Cole Custer of Stewart-Haas Racing narrowly missed the top spot, finishing a close second to the young dynamo of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Sam Mayer, the 20-year-old driver for JR Motorsports, tasted victory once again, clinching a pivotal win at Charlotte’s ROVAL in the Xfinity Series. Mayer, who started the race as the underdog ranking last in the playoff standings, managed to edge past Tony Stewart’s ace, Cole Custer, in a thrilling climax.

Behind Mayer’s roaring success were tales of valor and heartbreak. The #7 driver, Justin Allgaier, and #27 Jeb Burton, in an unexpected turn, collided right after a restart, shaking up the race dynamics. As the dust settled, Mayer found himself chasing down Cole Custer, who had previously secured his playoff spot.
Following the race, Frontstretch secured an interview with Custer to glean insights into the final restart and his preparations for the 2024 rendition of the ROVAL. When probed about his perspective on the second-to-last restart, Custer expressed astonishment.
“I couldn’t believe how far the 27 drove in. That was the second he hit the brakes. I knew he wasn’t going to make it. It was just desperation on his part. But I kind of saw that coming for sure,” Cole stated.
Burton’s gamble with old tires resulted in a crash with Allgaier’s Chevrolet. Yet, amidst these tales of despair, Sheldon Creed managed to get into the Round of 8 by a razor-thin margin.

The Xfinity Series has historically been dominated by AJ Allmendinger at this road course. Still, with Allmendinger’s absence this year, Mayer humorously dubbed himself “Allmendinger 2.0.” While Mayer celebrated his 3rd road course victory this season, others weren’t so fortunate. The playoff tussle saw racers like Daniel Hemric, Parker Kligerman, Josh Berry, and Jeb Burton facing the exit.
“This is our second-chance moment. I think we can make something out of it We can go on and do great things because of this win.” Mayer said after the race.
