Ahead of the pack in the duels, but still 68 laps behind Ford

Toyota reigned in the two 150-mile events known as the Duels that decided the Daytona 500 starting lineup. Tyler Reddick won the opening duel, securing a solid starting berth in the main event, while, Christopher Bell’s excellent game landed him a coveted berth in the second row.

In the initial practice session, Toyota teams delivered a standout performance, with veteran driver Denny Hamlin leading the charge. Hamlin’s blistering lap time of 45.575 seconds at 197.477 mph set the tone. Following suit, the next seven fastest racers were also clocked by drivers, including Erik Jones, Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs, John Hunter Nemechek, Tyler Reddick, Jimmie Johnson, and Bubba Wallace.

A Bitter Defeat to Chevrolet

Toyota’s supremacy in duels and practice sessions did not translate to a triumph at NASCAR’s most celebrated and controversial event. The cars endured an agonizing setback in the race as Chevrolet highlighted its power on the track. William Byron, piloting the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, claimed victory, with teammate Alex Bowman trailing in second. This Chevrolet sweep dealt a significant setback to Toyota.

However, the outcome was in sharp contrast to the manufacturer’s prior promise. The 2024 Daytona 500 demonstrated racing volatility and the obstacles Toyota faced against Chevrolet.

The Toyotas possessed great expectations for the 2024 Daytona 500 after sweeping the duels and claiming eight of the top ten positions in the practice session. However, the ambition was shattered by a string of mishaps and errors. Even though Chevrolet eclipsed and outsmarted Toyota, claiming victory in a chaotic and entertaining race, it was Ford that led the most laps: 103. Now that Toyota is 68 laps short of performing as Ford did, they will need to regroup, recover from this grim consequence, and strive to regain their competitive edge in the forthcoming NASCAR events.
